  • Grayson County keeps season...

    BASTIAN -- Nobody likes having to come from behind, especially with the season on the line, but out in front was a dangerous place to be Tuesday. Galax gained and lost a three-run lead in the first inning and Grayson County did some hand-wringing after taking a late five-run lead, but the Blue Devils were able to hang on to enough of the lead to post an 11-7 win in the Mountain Empire District baseball semifinals at the Bland Sports Complex.

    WYTHEVILLE -- Grayson County came up short in its bid to unseat Bland County atop the Mountain Empire District girls’ tennis standings, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Bears in a playoff for the regular season championship. The win Tuesday on the campus of Wytheville Community College propelled defending champion Bland County into this week’s Region C tournament, where the Bears will face Radford.

  • Cavs stopped short of SWD title

    ABINGDON -- A three-run sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Abingdon to a 4-1 win over Carroll County in the Southwest District baseball tournament championship Thursday. The Cavaliers (16-6) had tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Jared Cox reached on an error and scored on a base hit by No. 9 batter Adam Nester, but the Falcons took command an inning later.

Tournament is open to Angels (8-10) and Ponytails (11-12) teams. All proceeds will benefit Emily’s Wagon, which provides school, art and craft supplies to pediatric patients.
