  • Thorne, Blue Devils take MED

INDEPENDENCE –– For four innings, Grayson County pitcher Morgan Thorne was perfect. By the time perfection had escaped her, she and the Blue Devils were too far ahead for it to matter.

Grayson County won its third straight Mountain Empire District tournament championship Thursday, jumping out to a 10-0 lead before settling for a 13-5 win in the championship game at B.A. Rhudy Fields.

  • Cavaliers, Blue Devils split...

INDEPENDENCE –– Carroll County put forth one of its most complete efforts of the year. Grayson County got a game-winning walk-off home run. Good thing it was a double-header. Too much good happened for one team to go home bummed out.

The Cavaliers used a five-run rally to knock off Grayson County 6-2 in the first game, and Megan Funk’s two-out walk-off homer capped a four-run rally in the final two innings that saw the Devils earn a split with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

    SOCCER

    Galax 8, Narrows 1

Dio Rodriguez and Luis Moreno each recorded a hat trick as Galax completed an undefeated regular season with an 8-1 Mountain Empire District win.

Charlie Adams and Edu Rojas each scored once for Galax (15-0-1 overall, 6-0 district).

Cody Holley scored the lone goal for Narrows.

    Carroll Co. 3, Tazewell 1

Lucas Webb’s first career varsity goal turned out to be the eventual game winner as the Cavaliers took a Southwest District win Thursday in Tazewell, their first road win of the season.

  • Cavs throw wrench into SWD

HILLSVILLE — Two 10 minute overtimes produced zero points as Carroll County tied Tazewell during senior night in a Southwest District girls’ soccer match Thursday at Tommy Thompson Field.

The Lady Bulldogs came on strong, dominating the first 10 minutes of the game, including a goal with 34 minutes remaining in the first half.

Tazewell’s Laken McReynolds squeezed past two Carroll defenders and found Haylee Walker wide open only feet from the box.

Walker punched the ball into the back of the net and gave Tazewell the lead early.

  • Another 'no cigar' day...

HILLSVILLE –– The season is getting short, but if there is any justice in the world, Carroll County and pitcher Drew Webb will have a day similar to their last two district outings and actually be able to feel good about it when it’s over.

A week after holding Richlands to four hits in a 5-4 loss, Webb limited Abingdon to three hits, but once again a minimal amount of offense was enough to hand Carroll County a close loss, this time a 2-0 decision in a Southwest District game Tuesday at Bill Worrell Field.

  • Tide outlugs Wave; Devils lose...

NARROWS –– Galax finished its regular season with a bang Tuesday, outscoring Narrows 18-14 in a Mountain Empire District slugfest.

The Green Wave (7-10 overall, 1-6 district) took an 11-6 lead with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the third, but Galax rallied into a 14-11 lead by scoring seven in the top of the fifth on base hits by Zach Robinson, Jacob Woodel, Thomas Shaffer, Brock Cox, Todd Nichols, Morgan Holder plus a two-run Tyler Houk double.

  • Tide rolls; Cav second at Big...

Carroll County’s Drew McCraw barely missed out on another title in one of Virginia’s premier wrestling events, while Galax continued its team dominance during wrestling action last week.

Galax finished 3-0 in a five-team match in Hillsville, then won five matches without a loss to take the team title at the Shady Mania Duals in Shady Springs, W.Va.

  • High School Basketball Round-Up...

    BOYS

    Grayson County 61, Pocahontas 70

Winless in district play for seven years, Pocahontas’ first W came against one of the Mountain Empire District’s perennial title contenders.

The Indians got 25 points from Brandon Pauley, including the 1,000th of the junior’s career, and held on to a big early lead to claim a 70-61 win Friday night.

  • High School Basketball Round-Up...

    BOYS

    Galax 83, Fort Chiswell 62

Galax got double-digit scoring from four different players and pulled away for an 83-62 win over Fort Chiswell in a Mountain Empire District boys’ game Friday night.

Galax (13-3 overall, 6-0 district) outscored the Pioneers 22-14 in the second quarter to take a 47-34 lead into the half, then added to its lead down the stretch by outscoring Fort Chiswell 14-7 in the fourth.

Aundrey Sams led the Maroon Tide with 18 points and G Zachary added 17. Jeremiah Criner scored 16 and Jacob Bartlett tossed in 10.

  • Cavaliers fade down the stretch

HILLSVILLE –– As far as overall records go, Carroll County has been far and away the top team in the Southwest District. The Cavaliers nonetheless have found themselves amidst a logjam in the district standings.

In good shape to notch their fifth straight win as well as to avenge their only league loss of the year, the Cavaliers were outscored 21-8 over the final five and a half minutes Friday and fell to Abingdon 63-57.
