HILLSVILLE –– Galax topped Grayson County for the team win while Carroll County runners took the top three spots in the girls’ race of a cross country meet last Wednesday at Hillsville Elementary School.

  • Blue Devils, Maroon Tide finish second

RINER – Grayson County came in a close second last Thursday in a three-team golf played at Auburn Hills Golf Club in Riner.

Homestanding Auburn finished first with a team total of 176 while the Blue Devils shot a 179 and third place Fort Chiswell a 195.

Levi Lundy paced the Blue Devil attack with a 43. Trevor Hawks and Chase Hensdell both shot a 45, Sawyer Moxley a 46 and Jackson Moxley a 56.

The Blue Devils will play a tri-match today (Monday) at New River Country Club in Sparta, N.C., against Auburn and Galax.

  • Grayson County runs past Trojans

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball, built a three-touchdown lead by the early stages of the second half and went on to open its season with a 28-7 nondistrict win over Alleghany (N.C.) Friday at Bill Strong Field.

  • Cavs open strong, taking 21-6 win from Patrick

HILLSVILLE –– The Carroll County Cavaliers left the stadium with an opening-night win under their belts after a 21-6 victory in a non-district challenge this past Friday against the Patrick County Cougars.

  • Tide tennis falls in semis

BLACKSBURG –– Galax was the final Class 1 team standing in all three disciplines at last week’s boys’ tennis state tournaments. Unfortunately, the Maroon Tide was rewarded with just some pats on the back and a lot of ‘atta-boys.’

  • Maroon Tide overcomes Auburn in semis, 2-1

RADFORD –– The two goals scored in the first 14 minutes of the Class 1 boys’ soccer semifinal were double what Galax and Auburn had combined to score against one another in their previous 193 minutes of live play. It took another 60 minutes after that initial flurry, but Eric Escobar made sure that a third straight match between the two Mountain Empire District rivals would not once again require overtime.

  • Golden goal win for Tide boys

RINER –– As time wore on in the Mountain Empire District boys’ soccer tournament finals Thursday, minute after scoreless minute, Galax head coach Troy Barkley began to think to himself, “This is a no-lose situation.”

Though he was ruminating in philosophical terms, it turns out that his thoughts were correct in more practical matters as well.

  • Galax moves on to softball semis

Galax scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings and got a strong closing statement from Ashlyn Brady in the sixth as the Maroon Tide blanked Covington 5-0 in the Region 1C softball quarterfinals Monday at Mountain View Park.

  • Tide belts Rockets 14-3

By and large, Galax did everything that a higher-seeded baseball team should do in a first-round tournament game. Everything, that is, except win by the mercy rule, but there was nothing that could be done about that.

The No. 2 seed out of the Mountain Empire District, Galax took an early lead, built momentum from there and eventually whacked Pioneer No. 3 Craig County 14-3 in a Region 1C quarterfinal at Felts Park.
