  • Lady Cavs honored for winning state title

HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Board of Supervisors proclaimed July 13-20 as Lady Cavaliers Week at its July meeting, in honor of the Carroll County High School (CCHS) Lady Cavalier Softball team.

During the meeting, Supervisor Chairman Phil McCraw read a resolution aloud, reviewing the undefeated team’s accomplishments.

  • One team’s loss...

It goes without saying that Carroll County’s Group 4A state championship game Saturday was the biggest win in any sport in Carroll County High School history. The victory capped a 26-1 season and brought home the first state championship trophy to a school that opened its doors in the fall of 1969.

The second-biggest win may well have been the Cavaliers’ only loss.

  • Half the drama, twice the hardware

RADFORD –– Nine members of the Galax high school boys’ soccer team graduated Saturday morning. The suddenly-former GHS students still had one more course to repeat that afternoon before calling it a day.

Galax tidied up a bit of early postgraduate work at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium, thoroughly dismantling Washington and Lee 8-2 and winning its second straight Group 1A state championship.

  • Reigning champs deny Carroll Co. 4A North title

PURCELLVILLE –– Woodgrove scored single runs in each the first and fourth innings Saturday, spoiling Carroll County’s perfect record and denying the Cavaliers a region championship by holding on for a 2-0 win in the Region 4A North title game.

  • Blue Devil girls drop region final in 11-inning thriller

HILLSVILLE –– One play doesn’t make a game, and one day doesn’t make a season. But one play made Floyd County’s day.

Grayson County and Floyd County battled into the 11th inning Saturday before the Buffaloes were able to break the stalemate and claim the Region 2A West softball championship with a 4-3 win at Carroll County High School.

  • Maroon Tide repeats as 1A West soccer champs

WYTHEVILLE –– Galax continued its dominating run through the postseason and successfully defended its Region 1A West boys’ soccer championship Friday, blanking Radford 5-0 at George Wythe High School.

Galax (18-1), which has allowed six goals in its last 14 matches, posted its fourth straight shutout and the seventh in its last eight games.

  • Grayson County breaks semifinal hex with 2-1 win

    DANVILLE –– Semifinal roadblock, begone.

  • Number 1 tops Number 1(a)

BLACKSBURG –– After 21 matches, the Grayson County boys’ tennis team is undefeated. After 20 matches, Galax is undefeated against every team not named Grayson County.

The Blue Devils kept their season record unblemished, reached a season goal and claimed the 1A/2A West Region team championship Thursday, and both teams move on to the state semifinals after Grayson’s 5-1 defeat of Galax on the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center’s outdoor courts at Virginia Tech.

  • Raiders stun Galax in 1A West

Matthew Branham was effectively wild. But at this time of year, anything that works is wildly effective.

Branham’s two-hitter was enough to overcome seven walks and five wild pitches as J.I. Burton upset Galax 7-4 in the Region 1A West quarterfinals Monday at Felts Park.

  • Carroll comes on strong to stay perfect

HILLSVILLE –– Sydney Nester put a one-two punch on Chancellor Monday night in the opening round of the Region 4A North softball tournament played at Carroll County High School.

Nester not only tossed a one-hitter but she also had a two-run home run to lead the undefeated Cavaliers to a 12-0 victory over the Chargers and advance to the semifinals today (Wednesday) at Fluvanna at 6 p.m.
