  • Grayson girls open with 43-31 win over Trojans

SPARTA, N.C. – Kassie Hawks scored 16 points Tuesday night to lead Grayson County to a 43-31 victory over Alleghany in the season opener for both teams.

Hawks was a strong force for the Blue Devil inside game as she scored the first basket in a game in which Grayson never trailed.

The Blue Devils led 5-0 before Kenyre Adkins hit a foul shot for the Trojans first point with 4:42 to play in the first period.

  • State finals matchups to be set tomorrow

As the playoff field is trimmed by half each week, these columns are getting shorter.

    You’re welcome.

Semifinal Saturday is upon the 24 teams not yet ready to play basketball, headlined in our neck of the woods by Galax’s trip to the Northern Neck to face Beast of the East (a) Essex, and George Wythe’s hosting of Beast of the East (b) Riverheads in the Group 1A final four.

  • Beast of the east stands between Tide, finals

Situated on opposite ends of the state, the only time Galax and Essex will ever meet on the football field will be in the advanced stages of the playoffs. But despite being five hours apart, the Maroon Tide and the Trojans have taken a similar path to get to where they are right now.

  • By Dodd, that’s a lot of points

Galax and J.I Burton have never met on the football field, but there is a connection between the two.

  • VHSL playoff stuff – The Cliff notes version

I’ll be honest with you here…I was kinda hoping for a road game Friday.

  • Panthers oust Maroon Tide

SALTVILLE –– Galax had seen hitters like this before. The Maroon Tide had faced the power, the leaping ability, the energizing effect that a series of blazing kills can have on a team and its home fans.

Up until the first round of the Region 1A West volleyball tournament, there had usually been a reprieve when such a hitter rotated away from the front, but no such abatement would come against Northwood.

  • Richlands too much for Devils

RICHLANDS – Grayson County fumbled the opening kickoff last Friday night in the opening round of the Region 2A West playoffs and with just over a minute ticked off the clock, trailed Richlands 7-0.

The game, played on the unlucky Friday the 13th, only got worse and when the final horn sounded, the Blue Devils were eliminated from the playoff picture, 63-7.

The Blue Tornados came into the game with a 9-1 record, losing early in the season to Union by a single point, 42-41, and the leader of the Southwest Conference.

  • Cavaliers, Blue Devils ousted in conference tournaments

SALEM –– Carroll County couldn’t duplicate the formula it used to upend Salem the last time it played on the Spartans’ home floor and the Cavaliers saw their season come to a close Wednesday with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-20 loss in the Conference 24 semifinals.

Carroll (14-11) had knocked off Salem (11-10) in five sets to manage a regular-season split with the Spartans, but Salem jumped to leads of 8-1 and 11-5 in the first two sets.

  • Tide tops Warriors for region bid

Forced to cobble together a new rotation in the absence of middle hitter Essence Brown, and given one day to do so, second-seeded Galax responded with a 25-16, 6-25, 25-22, 25-10 win over No. 4 Chilhowie in the second of two Conference 46 volleyball semifinal matches Wednesday at Galax High School.

The win set up an all-maroon title match, as George Wythe’s top-seeded Maroons knocked off No. 4 Fort Chiswell 25-19, 25-17, 25-23.

  • Wythe denies Maroon Tide

George Wythe twice rallied from being down a set, then pulled away from a 10-10 tie in the fifth set to upend Galax for the Conference 46 volleyball tournament championship Thursday at Galax High School.

    The top-seeded Maroons (18-8) ended the match with a 4-1 run to notch the 16-25, 25-19, 14-25, 25-15, 15-11 win.

Needless to say by looking at the individual set scores, it was an up-and-down night for both teams.
