  • Sharpshooting Maroons top Devils for MED title

    Grayson County nearly overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit, but a blistering third quarter by George Wythe proved too tall an order for the Blue Devils as the Maroons won the Mountain Empire District tournament championship, 77-68 Wednesday at Galax High School.

    HILLSVILLE –– The best offense, the saying goes, is a good defense. Or is it the best defense is a good offense? At any rate, for Carroll County Friday evening, a great defense brought out the best in its offense.

  • Carroll, Galax athletes swim to Richmond

    The competitive swim teams at Galax and Carroll County are still in their relative infancy, but both are making great strides despite the struggles a new athletic program often experiences.

    In its second season as a team sport at Carroll County, the Cavalier program earned a region championship by an individual and will be represented at the state level for the first time, while Galax will have two swimmers with a combined three region titles among its state contingent.

  • Carroll girls keep rolling

    HILLSVILLE –– The Carroll County girls won their semifinal Three Rivers District game against Giles in spectacular fashion Monday night, dominating the Spartans 92-24 and advancing to the tournament finals Tuesday night against Floyd County.

    The Cavaliers (19-3) also broke the school record for 3-pointers, draining 14 to top the old record of 11.

    Carroll County coach Marc Motley said Laken Alley had 12 assists in the game, tying a school record.

  • Maroon Tide, Cavalier girls clinch titles

    RINER –– Galax built a 17-point lead in the first eight minutes and locked up the Mountain Empire District regular season championship Monday with a 69-37 win over Auburn.

    Leading 24-7 after the first quarter, the Maroon Tide (18-3 overall, 11-1 district) extended its lead to 26 points, 41-15, by halftime.

  • Galax wins fourth straight

    Break up the Maroon Tide.

    After a rough start to the basketball season, Galax appears to have found its groove and the Maroon Tide picked up its fourth straight win Monday night, shutting down Carroll County 50-31 in a nondistrict boys’ game.

  • Galax enters tournament play on a roll

    RINER –– To put the finishing touches on a strong finish to the regular season, Galax needed a strong finish in its season finale.

    The Maroon Tide steamed into Thursday’s Mountain Empire District first round on the swell of a five-game winning streak after concluding its regular schedule by pulling away from Auburn, 53-44, on Tuesday night.

    Galax reached the .500 mark for the season with the win, evening its mark to 10-10 overall. Seeded fifth with a 5-7 district record, the Maroon Tide opened MED tournament play Thursday at No. 4 Bland County.

  • Carroll completes perfect run



    HILLSVILLE – It’s not often that a team can go through a basketball season undefeated in the district but the Carroll County girls’ completed the feat to finish 12-0 in their first season in the Three Rivers District Wednesday night with a 77-24 victory over James River.

  • Horton hits milestone for Cavs

    HILLSVILLE – Carroll County’s Adam Horton surpassed 1,000 career points Wednesday night but it wasn’t enough to lead his team to a victory as the Cavaliers fell to James River 63-46 in a Three Rivers District game.

    Horton was impressive as he took game scoring honors with 28 but the feat wasn’t easy. He was double-and triple-teamed by the Knights throughout the game.

  • Third time no charm for Grayson girls

    MAX MEADOWS –– Having posted two wins this season over Fort Chiswell, Grayson County had no answer for the Pioneers the third time around as Fort roared to a 73-29 win Tuesday in the Mountain Empire District finale for both teams.
