  • Maroon Tide falls short in MED finals upset bid

    Sports Editor

In its bid to become the first Mountain Empire District team to hand Fort Chiswell a loss this year, Galax held the season champion Pioneers to just four second-half field goals on 22 attempts.
Unfortunately for the Maroon Tide, nobody has ever devised a solid plan for defending the free throw.
Fort Chiswell scored 15 of its 21 second-half points at the foul line, including 10-of-12 in crunch time, as the Pioneers held off a challenge from Galax to take a 58-54 win in the MED girls’ tournament championship game Friday.

  • Cavaliers survive Marion scare

HILLSVILLE –– Defeating a team three times in a season is plenty difficult. To beat a team twice in a single night is no easy task, either.

Carroll County seemingly put Marion away with a big third-quarter run but had to win the game again in the final seconds, finally subduing the Scarlet Hurricane 65-60 in a Southwest District tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

  • Galax, Grayson set up rematch

Justin Hash hit a career milestone  for Galax and Grayson County rallied to victory in the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball semifinals Tuesday at Galax High School.

In the first semifinal, season champion Galax thumped fourth-seeded Bland County 87-60 as Hash topped the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

The Maroon Tide (19-2) wasted no time taking control over the Bears (8-15), jumping out to a 19-point lead as Austin Pack and Jerad Brown teamed up for 17 first-quarter points as Galax surged to a 27-8 lead.

  • Bears end Grayson girls’ season

BLAND –– Grayson County’s season ended with a 20th straight defeat as Bland County took a 47-27 win in the Mountain Empire District girls’ tournament play-in game Monday.

Leading 11-7 after the first quarter, the Bears (7-14) outscored the Blue Devils 13-3 in the second period and cruised from there.

Katie Tate scored 14 points to pace Bland County, which advances to play Fort Chiswell in tonight’s semifinals at Galax. Kellie Morris scored 13 points for Bland.

Catherine Vaughan led Grayson County with 11 points.

  • Galax wrestlers earn titles

Nine area wrestlers punched their tickets to the state tournament, including three region champions and four runners-up, during the Region C and Region IV tournaments this past weekend.

Galax’s Junior Espinoza, Dante Ravenell and Chaz Sizemore all won a region title, all doing so by the narrowest of margins, and Frankie Shalabi placed third at the Region C tournament at Radford High School.

  • Galax boys, Cavalier girls take easy wins

Galax couldn’t have scripted a better way to end its regular season and springboard into tournament time. Carroll County? Not so much.

The Maroon Tide boys, crowned Mountain Empire District champs the night before without stepping on the floor thanks to Fort Chiswell’s upset of Grayson County, dominated from start to finish and capped an 18-2 campaign with an 81-48 win over the Cavaliers in a nondistrict game Friday night.

  • UPDATE -- Grayson loss hands Galax MED title

Grayson County dropped an 81-69 decision to Fort Chiswell in its Mountain Empire District finale Thursday, ending any hopes of a district championship for the Blue Devils.

Grayson County, which had defeated the Pioneers 99-84 eight days earlier, was outscored 48-31 in the second half after rallying for a 38-33 halftime lead. The loss gave Galax the regular season championship.

The Blue Devils finish second in the district standings and will face the No. 3 Pioneers in a rematch in the MED tournament semifinals Tuesday at Galax.

  • Stellar seniors wrapping it up at Carroll

HILLSVILLE –– It will soon be a sad day for Carroll County wrestling coach Jason Morris. In a few weeks, seven of his 11 wrestlers will take the mat for him the last time. The majority of these seven seniors have been together since sixth grade.
