  • Indians pose no problem for Tide in semis

    CHRISTIANSBURG –– Facing a dreary weekend forecast, the Virginia High School League moved up the state soccer semifinals by several hours in an effort to get the contests in with as little interference as possible from a meteorological standpoint. Galax more than cooperated, making sure things were over with quite early in a metaphorical sense, as well.

    RADFORD –– Having stormed through her state semifinal before the opposite pairing had completed its first set Thursday, Sarah Elmasry of Galax was given ample opportunity to observe her next opponent, to identify any strengths or potential weaknesses and to carefully formulate a game plan in her mind.

  • Late goal seals Galax soccer title

    A mild upset of sorts was pulled off at the Region 1C boys’ soccer finals Thursday. It didn’t come in the form of a win by second-seeded Auburn over No. 1 Galax, but rather in the fact that a match between the two ended with a winning margin of greater than one goal.

    The first inning of the Region 1C quarterfinal Monday at Felts Park was a ballgame in its own right. The rest of the afternoon was just details.

  • Maroon Tide back in state

    By the time Galax plays in the state soccer tournament, the Maroon Tide may already feel as if it has already been through one.

    Galax will certainly be primed for the final level of the postseason after having played a slew of matches against top-shelf competition, including Wednesday’s 3-1 win over George Wythe in the Region 1C semifinals at Galax High School.

  • Elmasry notches MED tennis title; Devils move on in baseball, softball

    RINER –– Sarah Elmasry of Galax knocked off Binal Patel of George Wythe on Thursday to win the Mountain Empire District girls’ singles tennis championship at Auburn High School.

    Patel had reached the championship match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Breanna Brewer of Grayson County while Elmasry defeated Auburn’s Haley Gordon 6-3, 6-1 in her semifinal to reach the title match.



  • Tide skins Bears in first round

    The Galax Maroon Tide is one of the top baseball teams in the Mountain Empire District, and they showed why last Friday with a stinging 12-2 victory over the Bland County Bears in the opening round of the MED tournament played in Felts Park.

    Galax actually spotted the Bears a two-run lead in the first inning.

    Collin Grady led off the game for the Bears, punching a single into right field.

    Jake Watters, the starting pitcher, helped his cause by ripping a long home run over the right field fence for a 2-0 Bland County lead.

  • Bears nip Galax; Cavs dodge Patrick

    Galax battled most of the way out of a four-run hole but couldn’t quite make it all the way back, falling to Bland County 4-3 in a Mountain Empire District game Friday at Felts Park.

  • Grayson County wrestler earns shot at nationals

    FREDERICKSBURG –– Jaron Greer of Grayson County High School earned the opportunity to represent Virginia at the junior nationals tournament this summer by winning a pair of championships this past weekend.

    Greer, a sophomore at Grayson wrestling for the New River Wrestling Club, won the freestyle and Greco Roman titles at the USMC/VAWA championships at Riverbend High School.

    Greer finished 3-0 in both the freestyle and Greco Roman divisions and is now eligible to wrestle at the USA Wrestling Nationals, July 11-20 in Fargo, N.D.

  • Carroll girls swamp Floyd

     HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County was unable to convert on several early scoring chances Monday against Floyd County. It took being called offside to kick the Cavaliers into gear as they zipped past Floyd County 7-0 in a Three Rivers District girls’ soccer match.
