  • REMEMBER WHEN: May 3-9
    2010 Galax picked up its first-ever baseball win over Grayson County as Travis Cockerham held the Blue Devils to four hits in a 4-1 Maroon Tide win. Adam Crotts pitched his second straight complete-game win as Carroll County downed Richlands 11-2. Crotts struck out 14.   2005 Matthew Tompkins threw a five-inning perfect game, striking out all 15 batters he faced, as Carroll County downed Grundy 4-0.
  • REMEMBER WHEN: April 12-18
    2010 Galax rapped 11 hits and scored 11 runs in the first inning, going on to drill George Wythe 19-8 in softball. Drew Cardwell’s second hit of the inning was a two-run home run that capped the huge start. Cardwell and Harley Brewer combined for seven hits and seven RBIs. Carroll County cut a 7-1 deficit to a single run but Grayson County held on for an 8-6 win in softball. Traci Crigger had three hits and five RBIs for Grayson.   2005

     According to Careercast.com, the occupation of Newspaper Reporter is dead last on a list of 200 jobs, ranked from best to worst. Lumberjacks, no need to thank us for getting you out of the cellar. Besides, I’m not a newspaper reporter. I’m a sportswriter.

    2010 Galax avenged an earlier loss to Carroll County win a 3-1 win in Hillsville. Edu Rojas, Jose Rojas and Miguel Lopez scored for the Maroon Tide. Chantasy Cottrell and Maegan Madrigal each scored two goals in Galax’s 5-2 girls’ soccer win over Rural Retreat.   2005
  • REMEMBER WHEN
    2010 Grayson County scored twice in the top of the seventh, thanks in part to five stolen bases, and edged Tazewell 6-5 to complete a double header sweep. Jake Blizzard scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from Zach Wasilewski.  Travis Garvey had a solo home run and later doubled to knock in Greg Bryan with the eventual game-winning run as Galax edged Floyd County 7-6.
  • Special Olympians highlight ODAC tourney
     SALEM –– Carroll County Special Olympics traveled to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament recently for a halftime exhibition game at the Salem Civic Center. The Carroll team put on a real show for the crowd, scoring 18 points to go with many rebounds, assists and great teamwork, with the civic center’s public address announcer calling the play-by-play.
  • REMEMBER WHEN: March 15-21
    2010 Galax came back twice from three runs down and finally won in the bottom of the eight inning on a bases-loaded hit batsman, edging Floyd County 10-9.   2005 Beth Walker pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 12, and Amber Walker smacked a grand slam and accumulated seven RBIs in Galax’s 12-2 softball win over Auburn.

     2010 Jose Rojas and Darian Sizemore won individual state championships and Edu Rojas placed second as Galax finished second in the team standings at the Group A state wrestling tournament.
  • Carroll County Rec. to offer youth wrestling
    HILLSVILLE –– Registration is now underway by the Carroll County Parks and Recreation Department for a youth wrestling club. The club will be open for students in K-8th grade, with the program beginning in March and ending in mid-October. It will meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the Woodlawn School gymnasium from 6-7:30 p.m. Fees are $25 for registration, and a mandatory $15 fee to Coach for USA membership card.
  • REMEMBER WHEN: February 1-7
     2010 Carroll County remained unbeaten in Southwest District play and used a 14-1 run over the final four minutes to win 47-37 at Grundy. Kayla Goins poured in 25 points to go with 14 rebounds. Galax rallied from five points down by scoring the final 11 points of the game in a 71-65 win over Narrows. The win avenged a 24-point defeat to the Green Wave three weeks earlier. Justin Hash, Deion George and Devae Goins all scored between 18 and 20 points for Galax.
