• Thanks to couple who paid for meal

On Jan. 28, I had breakfast at the County Line Cafe in Galax.
A nice couple there bought my meal for me.
I would like to say “thank you” and may God richly bless you both.

  • Northam should resign as governor

Of course, Mr. Northam should resign.
Perhaps his remarkable gaffes are not impeachable, but he is an embarrassment to Virginia, if not to all Democrats, who have in the past and still continue to overlook any Democrats’ transgressions.
For his suggestion that infanticide could be done by medical doctors, his Virginia medical license should be reviewed and possibly revoked.

  • Thanking Carroll’s first responders

I would like to thank all those folks, all of whose names I do not know, for coming to my rescue to free me as soon as possible from my overturned Jeep on the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 27, about two miles north of Woodlawn on Coulson Church Road.
Specifically, I would like to thank State Trooper R.B. Phipps, Carroll County Deputy David Walls, Carroll County Rescue Squad EMTs and Adam Miller and others from HELP Towing for being so concerned and courteous and professional.

  • Finding no faith in federal government

I’m dedicating in memory of a two-year-old child and police officers killed in the line of duty.
2019 has come in, with ever-growing violence of sickening and disgusting incidents where parasites and losers of society know no boundaries or respect of life.
A caring heart looks around and sees a government in a free-fall situation, a street bully attitude. A shutdown proves nothing but pain and worries.

  • Community made fundraiser a success

Sincere appreciation is extended to Don and Judy Lundy, owners of 21 Grocery, for sponsoring the annual Allen Halsey Memorial Rook Tournament at the Elk Creek Rescue Squad on Jan. 26, in support of the local fire department and rescue units.
Thanks to all who came to play and donated, to the auxiliaries that prepared and served the food, and to those that in any way helped to make this fundraiser a big success.
Winners were Andy Taylor and Billie Joe Delp, first place; and John McCarthy and David Sutherland, second place.

  • Wall a common sense solution

There are legal ways to enter the USA. Many have suffered and some died, both American citizens and immigrants.
Immigrants are trying to take shortcuts that put themselves, and in many cases children, in danger — some resulting in death.
Every way that can help stop this situation is helping to become humane. This in no way should be political.
One common sense way to restrict entrance is a barrier that is secure. The junk that is there now is a disgrace. Those that believe otherwise are being misled.

  • Samaritan's Purse thanks volunteers

I am writing to thank Galax residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season.

  • Spending bill should include border security
  • Too much emphasis on sports in school

Why do we have schools and public education? The founding fathers believed that an educated populace was necessary in a democracy, whereby we govern ourselves by electing representatives to make laws and look out for the good of the people.
In the late 1800s and throughout the 20th century, schools were viewed as social institutions to change society. Hence, the so-called progressives embarked on a plan with more and more federal intervention. This continues today with No Child Left Behind and other programs.

  • Border wall would do more harm than good

Editor’s note: This letter was sent to U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-9th District) and the author requested it also be published in the newspaper. Griffith’s district includes the City of Galax and Carroll and Grayson counties.
