  • Court to decide AmerLink lease

    WILSON, N.C. — Carroll County and other affected parties should know if the federal bankruptcy court allows the lease sale for the former AmerLink sales center to go through after a hearing Jan. 24.
    AmerLink officials, in an economic deal with Carroll County, said the log home company would create 200 local jobs, but went bankrupt after building the model homes and half a saw mill. Carroll County sued to recoup 32 acres of industrial land and $600,000 in incentives from the deal, though an auction of former AmerLink properties generated far less revenue than that.

  • Water negotiations coming up dry so far

    HILLSVILLE — While the Carroll County Public Service Authority approved an agreement in December to buy water from the city of Mount Airy, N.C., for the area around Lambsburg’s Interstate 77 interchange, the city for its part has not signed on to be the supplier yet.
    County Administrator Gary Larrowe noted at the January authority meeting that county officials continued working on the potential relationship with Mount Airy.

  • Wildwood gets state grant for grading

    The Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority was awarded $589,000 by the Virginia Tobacco Commission last week, covering 90 percent of the cost of engineering and geotechnical testing for Wildwood Commerce Park.
    The Southwest Virginia Farmers' Market in Carroll County also received a grant from the commission.
    The commerce park is located off Interstate 77’s Exit 19 in Carroll County, about a mile from Twin County Regional Airport.

  • Hudson, Eastridge marry

    Lyndsey Hudson and Travis Eastridge were united in marriage Oct. 15, 2011, at Foster Falls Amphitheater in Foster Falls. The Rev. Paul Looney officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Dickie and Diane Strock of Bland. She is the granddaughter of Tom Hudson and the late Margie Hudson of Max Meadows.

    The groom is the son of Eddie and Rhonda Eastridge of Galax. He is the grandson of Lois Vaughan of Galax and the late Alfred Vaughan and Juanita Eastridge of Galax and the late Ingram Eastridge.
    Matron of honor was Leigh-Ann Pike, sister of the bride.

  • Local Food Lion not on closing list

    While Food Lion is closing more than 100 stores, the location in Hillsville is not one of them.
    The local grocery is not on Food Lion’s list of underperforming stores set to close in the next 30 days.
    In Virginia, Food Lion stores in Roanoke and Radford will close, according to Delhaize, the Belgian supermarket chain that operates the Food Lion brand. Though nearby Mount Airy, N.C., has four Food Lions, none are on the chopping block.
