  • Carroll schools make calendar changes

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll School Board added two days back to the school year for the two missed, and students should officially begin summer after May 15.
    At the March 13 meeting, the school board officially adopted the calendar for the 2012 year, which is to begin for students Aug. 8.
    This action followed an initial discussion of calendar items at the February meeting.

    HILLSVILLE ― “Don't close our school,” members of the Gladesboro community pleaded with the Carroll County School Board at a fiscal year 2013 budget meeting Monday.

  • Feltses celebrate 60 years

    Ann (Jackson) and Keith Felts celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family on Feb. 29.
    They enjoyed many calls and cards for their special day.

    They have two daughters and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  • Hanks, Crouse to be married

    Steve and Lori Hanks of Galax announce the engagement of their daughter, Lorian Elizabeth Hanks, to Joshua Lee Crouse, son of Jerry and Linda Crouse of Coal Creek.

    Hanks is the granddaughter of the late William Harry Snow and Marie Snow of Galax, and the late Albert and Frances Hanks of Galax.
    Crouse is the grandson of the late Lawerence and Juanita Crouse of Galax and Gilmer and Norene Wilson of Dobson, N.C.
    An April 7 wedding is planned in Woodlawn.

  • He's five

    Kasen Lane Galyean celebrated his fifth birthday Jan. 7 with a Scooby Doo party at his home with family and friends. He is the son of Donnie and Angie Galyean of Baywood.

    He is the grandson of Jimmy and Cathy Jones, Dennis and Janie Cox and Nelson and Linda Galyean. He has two sisters, Hailee Anders and Kristin Galyean.

  • Turns one

    Conner Andrew Sutherland will turn one March 8. He will celebrate March 4 with family and friends. His parents are Jessica and Matthew Sutherland of Independence.

    Maternal grandparents are David and the late Connie Osborne of Fries. Paternal grandparents are Richard and Brenda Sutherland of Elk Creek and two uncles, Brandon and Shane Osborne, both of Fries.

  • Graham, Phipps to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Gary L. Graham of Salisbury, N.C., announced the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Christine Graham of Salisbury, to Devin Ray Phipps of Winston-Salem, N.C.

    The future groom is the son of Michael R. Phipps of Lansing, N.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Roger Brown of Jefferson, N.C. He is the grandson of Georgia Woods and the late Hardin Woods of Independence, and Edith Phipps and the late Thomas Ray Phipps of Independence.

  • Morales to be deported after serving 188 months

    ROANOKE — A 29-year-old Galax man will serve 188 months in a federal prison for a drug-related conviction and then be deported, according to court papers.
    Juan Israel Morales was recently sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute of a large quantity of methamphetamine.
    An August 2011 federal indictment originally charged Morales with possession of meth with the intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in a drug trafficking crime, according to court papers.
