    CHARLOTTESVILLE –– For now, it looks like Carroll County is stuck.

    Appeals by both Carroll County and Pulaski County were denied Tuesday by the Virginia High School League as the two schools tried to prevent the inclusion of Franklin County in the River Ridge District should the VHSL approve a 6A classification system beginning next school year.

  • Galax schools working to meet new standards

    According to the No Child Left Behind Act’s new Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO), each subgroup of students will have a different target to meet based on the history of how those groups have performed, said Rebecca Cardwell, Galax Schools’ assistant superintendent.
    That’s what makes AMOs different from the federal education act’s Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) benchmarks, which no longer apply in Virginia.

  • Hillsville picks six finalists for town manager

    HILLSVILLE — Town council members held a special meeting Sept. 4 to select the interviewees for the vacant town manager’s position.
    Hillsville has received 40 applications for the post, according to town officials. Larry South resigned from the position in June after 18 years.
    At the special meeting, council members selected six candidates to interview for the job, Mayor Greg Crowder said.

  • Nuckolls indicted on child porn charges


    INDEPENDENCE — Andrew Mark Nuckolls, 25, of Independence, has been indicted for the possession of child pornography by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.
    The sealed indictment was handed down when the grand jury met July 27.
    Nuckolls has been charged with one count of possession of child pornography, which is a class 6 felony, and one count of possession of child pornography, second offense, which is a class 5 felony.

    HILLSVILLE — Theft of museum pieces worldwide lags only behind the drug trade and gun running in illegal activities, amounting to hundreds of thousands of incidents and a source of funding for major crime syndicates, according to the FBI.
    Local investigators can now add a June art theft from the Carroll County Governmental Center to that total, after two pieces of original artwork made by talented public school students mysteriously disappeared, according to educators.

    Christopher Mason Nobili celebrated his third birthday recently with family and friends with a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse party at his home in Charlotte, N.C.

    He is the son of Chris and Christina Nobili of Charlotte. He is the grandson of John and Virginia Nobili of Woodlawn, Rebecca and Danny Primm of Austinville and Arlie and Toni Hall of Fancy Gap. He is the great-grandson of Artie Belle Primm of Hillsville.
