  • Easter play shows 'The Way'

    The Music Ministry of the First Baptist Church of Galax will present its annual Easter musical this weekend, beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. with repeat performances on Saturday and Sunday.
    “The Way” will tell about the life of Jesus Christ through drama, choir and orchestra performances.

  • HRS carries out its last act

    HILLSVILLE — Hillsville Rescue Squad, which has been dying a slow death for years, will linger no more after disbursing its funds Wednesday.
    Many witnesses gathered in the offices of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce to witness the agency last act.
    As a kind of last will and testament, long-time members of the defunct rescue squad handed out $3,000 checks to benefit non-profit groups based in the Twin Counties.

  • Carroll grand jury issues 149 indictments

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County grand jury on Monday issued a total of 149 indictments, three of them sealed.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a conviction.
    Those named in the indictments include:
    • Alan Lloyd Alexander - possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug; possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule II drug; possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony
    • Ricky Gene Alexander - grand larceny (two counts) of property belonging to Richard Burnett and Joseph Miller

  • Prison to begin hiring for fall opening

    INDEPENDENCE — Those looking to break into prison are few, but the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) is offering just such an opportunity as it gears up to open the long-awaited state prison in Grayson County.
    River North Correctional Center is scheduled to open by October, after the Virginia General Assembly last month included nearly $18 million in the state budget to fund it. The medium-security facility was completed in 2010, but has sat dormant since then because there has been no money to operate it until now.

  • Hamby, Love to be married

    Edwin and Lois Love of Galax announce the engagement of their son, Kevin Shayne Love, to Darlene Marie Hamby, the daughter of Sonya and Terry Hamby of Elkins, W.Va.

    A March 23 wedding is planned at Trinity Baptist Church at noon.
    Family and friends are invited.

    Kasen Lane Galyean celebrated his sixth birthday Jan. 9. He celebrated with a motorcross party at Blue Ridge Lanes with family and friends. He is the son of Donnie and Angie Galyean of Baywood.

    He is the grandson of Nelson and Linda Galyean of Baywood, Jimmy and Cathy Jones of Galax and Dennis and Janie Cox of Cox’s Chapel. He has two sisters, Hailee Anders and Kristin Galyean.

    Hunter James Lineberry of Hillsville celebrated his first birthday Feb. 13 with a Mickey Mouse themed party.

    His parents are Mark and Adair Lineberry. His grandparents are Darrell and Ramona Surface, Terry and Susie Lineberry and Pat Shumate.

    Riley Preston Mays celebrated his fourth birthday Feb. 8 with a party at his home with family and friends.

    He is the son of Scott and Priscilla Mays. His maternal grandparents are Gordon Bowman and Donnie and Janie Turner. Paternal grandparents are Bobby and Wanda Cothren Mays.
