  • Chase in two states end with crash

    A 29-year-old Galax woman faces several charges following a low-speed pursuit Saturday night that started in Galax, continued into Grayson County and Alleghany County, N.C., and ended back in Galax.
    Capt. James Cox of the Galax Police Department said Officer Trevor Jefferson spotted a Ford Mustang parked behind Hillcrest Baptist Church on Virginia 89/South Main Street around 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 12. When he pulled up behind the vehicle, the driver, identified as Amber Blevins, pulled off and headed south on 89.

    Josie Criner was honored with a party to celebrate her 90th birthday Aug. 16 at Fairview Baptist Church.

  • She's one

    Haleigh Grace Smith celebrated her first birthday Aug. 26. She celebrated with a cookout at her home with special friends and family.

    She is the daughter of Cory and Elena Smith of Austinville. Paternal grandparents are Charles and Sue Smith of Fries. Maternal grandparents are Doug and Glenda Forester of Galax and the late James “Jimmy” Brewer Sr. of Fries. Great-grandmother is Blanche Payne of Whitetop.

    Jacob Lane Huff turned one Oct. 9. He is the son of Joshua and Jennifer Huff of Galax. He has a sister Marella Huff of Galax.

    Paternal grandparents are Gary and Brenda Huff. Maternal grandparents are John and Mary Davis. Paternal great-grandparents are Alma Sizemore and Inez Huff. Maternal great-grandparents are John “Bill” and Shirley Davis, all of Galax. Family and friends will celebrate Huff’s birthday with a Farm party Oct. 11.

    Braeden Hunter Ward celebrated his fourth birthday June 26 with a bouncy house birthday party at his home. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He has a younger brother, Levi.

    His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley, and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Agnes Cox, Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

    Tiarra Skye Bedwell celebrated her eighth birthday July 27 with family and friends with a Barbie party at the Fries Pool. Her birthday was July 25.

  • Two injured in Cana motorcycle crash

    CANA ― A single-vehicle wreck involving a 2006 Honda motorcycle Sunday on Fishlake Road in Carroll County resulted in serious injuries for the driver and passenger, according to a Virginia State Police report.
    The incident occurred at approximately 5:55 p.m. when the motorcycle driven by Chadwick Lee Haynes, 39, of Mount Airy, N.C., was traveling northbound on Fishlake Road, exceeding the posted speed limit, according to Trooper J.D. Delp.

  • Galax woman charged with grand larceny

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County deputies have recovered two stolen rings and placed a charge of grand larceny from a Sept. 17 incident.
    Peggy Burcham Calfee of the Galax area reported the theft of three rings — two gold with diamonds and one sterling silver — from her home to Carroll Deputy Billy Johnson, according to police reports.
    The rings were valued at approximately $650, and have an even higher sentimental value to Calfee, as one was a gift from her late husband.

  • Carroll sweeps pair of RRD volleyball matches

    CHRISTIANSBURG – Carroll County won a close second set and swept a River Ridge District opponent for the second time in three days, knocking off Christiansburg 25-17, 25-22, 25-15 Thursday night.

    The Cavaliers improved to 12-7 overall and evened their district record at 4-4 with the two wins.

    Jessica Sheek put away nine kills and also had a couple of aces for Carroll County, which got 14 assists from Brianna Delby and 10 digs from Gracie Lindsey.

    Kayla McMurray came up with 23 digs for the Blue Demons, who remained winless after 15 matches.
