  • Chapman found guilty of first degree murder

    HILLSVILLE —Yashisca Dushawn Richardson Chapman, 41, of Roanoke, was found guilty of murder in the first degree in the stabbing death of Roland Eugene Clayton Jr., 51, also of Roanoke, in the Carroll County Circuit Court on Wednesday, June 12.
    The jury recommended a sentence of 40 years in prison and a fine of $20,000.

  • Bluegrass boot camp

    Aspiring young bluegrass musicians once again had the chance to learn from the pros at this year’s Bluegrass Bootcamp at HoustonFest, held June 7 in Galax’s Felts Park. The day-long program at the music festival offered a series of workshops with the likes of family act Mountain Highway, Shadowgrass members and Dori Freeman, Scott Freeman and Willard Gayheart. Students took lessons with their preferred instrument, or in the craft of songwriting, and gave performances at the end of the day.

  • Grayson citizens can sign up for tax relief

    INDEPENDENCE — The deadline for Grayson County’s annual tax relief program for the elderly and disabled has been extended to June 30 this year, as the Grayson County Board of Supervisors plans to expand the program’s guidelines and include more residents.

  • Relay for Life set in Carroll

    CARROLL  - Local communities are looking forward to this year’s upcoming Relay For Life charity walk and helping to promote the organization’s ongoing fundraiser.
    The charity event will be held this coming week, starting off with a Survivor & Caregiver Banquet on June 19 at the First United Methodist Church, located at 225 Fulcher Street, Hillsville, as an opportunity to celebrate the survivors of cancer and their caregivers. Registration for the banquet is at 4:30 p.m., and dinner begins at 5:00 p.m.

    Phillip and Wilma Ayers of Galax will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary July 3. They have one son, Michael Ayers, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Pari Elise Snider celebratd her third birthday April 19 with a Baby Shark party with family. Her parents are Curtis and Lorie Snider. She has three older sisters, Blair, Palin and Paisley. Her grandparents are Danny and Linda Deskins of Dugspur, Harold and Joyce Snider of Dublin and the late Kathy Snider. Her aunts are Holy Lane and Gina Bigham.

    Ray and Mabel Porter will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on June 29, 2019.

    They were married in York, S.C., on this date in 1954.

    Ray is retired from ABF and Mabel is retired from Sears.

    They have two sons, Roger and Randy; two grandchildren; Kaitlin Porter Caviness and Michael Porter; and one great-grandson, Jaxon Riggs Caviness who will turn 1 in July, 2019.

    Luke Harvey Ward turned five years old on Jan. 28. He celebrated with a Paw Patrol party and a trip to Great Wolf Lodge. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He has three brothers, Braeden, Levi and Grayson and a little sister, Jacey. His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward and Lacy and Dreams Bowman.
