  • Motorcycle chases result in arrests

    Two men are charged with a variety of violations following two separate motorcycle chases in Carroll County.
    In the first incident, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies apprehended a motorcycle thief after a high-speed chase that resulted in a crash and manhunt.
    Sheriff J.B. Gardner reported that on May 30, Deputy Jason Newman responded to a residence in Ward’s Gap to take a report of a stolen motorcycle.  

  • Fatality confirmed in Chestnut Drive wreck

    An accident on Galax’s Chestnut Drive at 6:18 a.m. Thursday resulted in the death of Ashley Danielle Lanier, 29, of Hillsville, according to Galax Police Capt. James Cox.

    Lanier was traveling north on Chestnut Drive in a 2002 Ford Focus when the vehicle left the right shoulder of the road, struck a guardrail and overturned into the creek.

    Galax firefighters responded to find the Focus on its top, submerged in the creek, at the bottom of a high, steep embankment, according to Chief David Hankley.

  • Carnival returns to Galax next week

    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department’s annual carnival will be held June 18-22 in Felts Park, with rides, midway games, bingo, lawnmower races and fireworks.
    Gates open at 5 p.m. for bingo and the carnival starts at 6 p.m. each day.
    Bingo runs every night until closing, with a 50% payout for each game and a $1,000 championship game Saturday night for qualifying players.

  • Grayson Graduates of 2019

    Approximately 106 Grayson County High School graduates received their high school diplomas; and a number of students were presented with various awards, certifications and seals during last Saturday’s ceremony in the high school auditorium.
    This year, the top two graduating students were Chloe Sage Cox and Cassadi Brooklyn Perry.
    WCC graduates were also honored; in addition to 32 Governor Scholar award winners. Honor Graduate certificates were awarded to the top 10 percent of the 2019 graduating class.
