  • Altavista tops Galax 3-1

     RICHMOND –– Galax jumped out to an early one-set lead but Altavista pulled out close wins in the next two sets and ended the Maroon Tide’s season 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 in the Group 1A state volleyball semifinals Friday morning at the Siegel Center.

    The Maroon Tide, runners-up in the West Region, trailed just 19-18 in the second and 23-22 in the third before the East Region champion Colonels pulled out the wins to take a 2-1 match lead.

  • Runaway truck injures Hillsville man

    HILLSVILLE ― A 48-year-old Hillsville man was knocked down when the brakes on a 1988 Chevy pickup failed during recyclables collection Tuesday, according to police.
    Roger Leon Goad had been making the rounds on the collection route when he stopped to pick up items left outside a Cranberry Street home, according to Hillsville Police Department First Sgt. Robby Martin.

  • Supervisors: gym ideas should come from educators

    HILLSVILLE — Though the Carroll County supervisors supported a vague motion to look for a way to pay for an auxiliary gym at the high school, they rejected a more detailed motion on the same topic at their Nov. 14 meeting.
    The same supervisor, Bob Martin, proposed both motions, asking his fellow elected officials to “get the ball rolling” on an addition that would solve several areas of concern at Carroll County High School.

  • Feeding America food pantry raising money

    CANA — The Feeding America site in Cana supplies thousands of pounds of food to people in distressed areas, as fundraising continues to supply the local match to pay for 10 months of the service.
    Skills USA clubs at Carroll County High School threw a barbecue meal fundraiser on Oct. 30 go toward the $5,000 needed to secure the program.
    Fundraiser organizers presented a check for the $3,000 raised at the Feeding America mobile pantry at St. Paul on Nov. 19 to the Southwestern Virginia organization’s John Shoulders.

  • Utility fee could pay for stormwater work

    Galax officials are looking at options to fund the cost of a required stormwater program that will go into effect next summer.
    Galax City Council members discussed options for the program with City Manager Keith Barker and Carolyn Howard of Draper Aden Associates at their Nov. 12 meeting.

  • Industrial park needs new child care provider

    HILLSVILLE — Just as new job activity gears up in the Carroll County Industrial Park, Carroll officials have to find a new child care provider for the day care facility there.
    About 52 children attend the facility now.
    The Industrial Development Authority made affected parents aware of the coming change by letter in November.

  • He's one

    Brayden Lee Burnette turned 1 year old on Aug. 10, 2013.  He celebrated with a family trip to the zoo and a John Deere party with family and friends.

    The party was at a barn at Pipers Gap in the indoor riding arena.  Food included “spare tractor tires,”  “hay bales” and more. Pony rides were a great hit for the children. Brayden is the son of Justin and Dezirae Burnette of New Bern, N.C., where Justin serves as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

  • Porters to celebrate birthday, anniversary

    Pauline Porter will celebrate her 93rd birthday today, Nov. 15.

    She has been married to Philip Porter for 71 years. A family celebration will take place this weekend at the home of Ron and Sharon Porter.
