    Bud Nelson can hear it now.

    “Y’all are going to kill football,” he says, relaying a quote he hadn’t heard at the time but fully expects to, and probably quite often, in the coming weeks.

    As the director of the Galax Parks and Recreation Department, Nelson knows what’s coming from the naysayers, pessimists and cynics out there who foresee the collapse of civilization because the rec. department is doing something different than the way it’s always been done.

    And brother, this is different.

  • Hendricks aces par-4 No. 8 at Galax Municipal

    George Hendricks carded a hole-in-one on Aug. 3 while playing in the hospital league at Galax Municipal Golf Course.

    Hendricks, a biomedical engineer at Twin County Regional Hospital, recorded his hole-in-one on the par-4 eighth hole, which measures 295 yards. Hendricks had driven the green on No. 8 a few weeks earlier and said before the shot that he was going for the green again. He watched his drive roll onto the green and saw his ball disappear. Hendricks' playing partner, Ken Horton, walked up to the green and peered into the hole, seeing the ball.

  • Downtown Galax is for fiddlers' fans only Sunday morning

    Galax’s population will soar in the coming week, as thousands of fiddlin’ fans descend on the city.
    Felts Park will open its gates at 7 a.m. Sunday for the 75th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The competition opens Monday night and lasts through Aug. 14.

    A fund balance, answered County Finance Director Pam Smith at the July 12 Carroll Board of Supervisors meeting.
    The fund balance arises from more revenue coming in and the county spending less money than it budgeted for.

  • Fries bans Main Street parking

    FRIES — Residents and visitors to Fries will no longer be able to park along the town's narrow Main Street between Riverview and Firehouse Drive — unless they want a ticket and/or to have their vehicle towed.
    Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to begin enforcing an agreement the town had made previously with the volunteer fire department.

  • Fancy Gap visitors' center expands

    FANCY GAP — Construction on a visitor’s center project took wing as an Eagle Scout project in downtown Fancy Gap Tuesday.
    Building the 20 benches facing the Pickin’ Porch off U.S. 52 is specifically a final service project for Ian Robertson-Gouge and a community service project for the rest of Troop 286, said Scoutmaster Allen Robinson.
