  • Carnival coming to Galax next week

    The Galax Fire Department’s annual carnival is coming to Felts Park next week, from June 19-23.
    Rides and attractions will be provided by Michaels Amusements; gates open every evening at 5 p.m. with the carnival and bingo starting at 6 p.m.; bingo will be held every night from 6 p.m. until closing.
    Bingo games will offer a 50 percent payout, with a $1,000 championship game on Saturday night for qualifying players. Additionally, there will be a $300 cash drawing at 11 p.m. each night with one entry per paid adult ticket.

  • Hillsville PD receives funding for advanced equipment

    HILLSVILLE – Police Chief Wesley Yonce and Town Manager Retta Jackson announced Thursday that the Hillsville Police Department (HPD) received two separate grants during the month of May.
    First, the Hillsville Police Department has received a Walmart Foundation Community Grant in the amount of $2,120, to assist in the purchase of officer safety equipment. HPD partnered with the local Walmart Supercenter in Galax in the application process to successfully obtain these funds.

  • GHS let down by Lift Life

    The Lift Life Foundation has said it will not fund the Curtis Bartlett Fitness Center at Galax High School, according to School Superintendent Bill Sturgill at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
    Lift Life is a nonprofit organization of Bodybuilding.com. The nonprofit’s mission is to upgrade high schools’ weight rooms with state of the art equipment so students can improve their fitness levels.
