    Performers and Q&A sessions with the producers have been added to screenings of the film “Fiddlin’” at Galax’s Twin County Cinemas this weekend.
    The film is a documentary about the annual Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention and features many local performers.

  • Carroll grand jury indicts 101 suspects

    HILLSVILLE — Approximately 101 suspects were indicted on a total of 145 charges handed down by a Carroll County grand jury on Sept. 16.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt. Indictments handed down included the following:
    • Kristopher James Adams; 30 of Hillsville; possession of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine)
    • Samantha Marie Akers; 26 of Ivanhoe; possession of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute

  • Turner resigns as Carroll head coach

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County head football coach Jack Turner resigned his position on Monday and longtime assistant coach Casey Burcham will lead the Cavaliers through the remainder of the 2019 season.

    “Coach Turner has decided to resign for personal reasons and Casey Burcham has been named the interim coach,” said CCHS principal Chuck Thompson.

  • Galax man arrested on narcotics charges

    Grayson County investigators have arrested a Galax man on charges of narcotics possession and distribution.
    According to an arrest report provided by Sheriff Richard Vaughan, investigators executed a search warrant at 713 Delhart Road in Galax on Sept. 6. The search revealed a shotgun, ammunition, marijuana and paraphernalia consistent with the distribution of narcotics. Investigators also seized a 2017 Dodge Ram truck.

  • Late bloomer

    Not all botanical marvels are obvious to the casual observer, but Susan Simone of Cranberry Road might have one in her yard.
    Simone has three apple trees, one of which, after a summer of blooming and fruiting, shed its leaves in preparation for the coming cold weather — and then started blooming again.
    “I’m over 70,” she remarked, “and I’ve never seen this before.”

  • MED teams drop two to Maroons

    Area high school golf teams spent a busy week on the links last week, playing three nine-hole matches.

    Last Monday, George Wythe shot a collective 145 to win the match at Draper Valley Golf Course.

    Other teams were Fort Chiswell (185), Grayson County (210) and Bland County (214).

    Galax also participated in each match but had only one player and could not compete in team play.

    Alex Brannock shot a 42 for the Maroon Tide.

  • Cavaliers blank Galax 3-0

    Carroll County took control early in all three sets and never allowed Galax a serious run at the upset, rolling to a 3-0 win in a nondistrict match Thursday at Galax.

    The Cavaliers upped their season record to 6-2 with the 25-10, 25-19, 25-18 win while the Maroon Tide settled at 7-4.

    Leading 14-7 in the opening set, Carroll County won nine of the next 11 points to surge into a 23-10 lead, with Cassidy Lawson picking up three of the Cavaliers’ final seven points.

  • Blue Devils drop another close one

    RURAL RETREAT –– Grayson County turned in a bold effort last Friday night but still lost to Rural Retreat 15-7 in a nondistrict game played at Community Stadium.

    The Blue Devils have played three games this season and come out on the short end of the score by slim margins each time. But their record isn’t keeping the Blue Devils from playing hard and trying to turn their season around.

    Grayson came into the game with a two game winning streak against Rural Retreat, winning the past two years.
