  • Fancy Gap man dies in parkway crash

    State and local authorities are continuing their investigation of a fatal vehicle crash that occurred this past weekend on the Blue Ridge Parkway, in which a Carroll County man was killed.

    Reports from the Virginia State Police confirm that the crash occurred on a section of the parkway in Nelson County, approximately 5.4 miles south of Route 814.

  • Magic Mart to close in Galax

    BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The company that owns the Magic Mart chain has announced that it will close all its stores and offices and the company warehouse.

    Ammar’s Inc., based in Bluefield, operates a Magic Mart store in the Twin County Plaza shopping center at 1077 East Stuart Drive in Galax.

    It is one of 21 Magic Mart stores in four states.

  • Galax Elementary expansion begins

    The Galax Elementary School expansion and renovation project’s groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 28 at 6 p.m., as members of the school board and city council and a regional agent from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (the funding agency) picked up painted shovels with the Maroon Tide logo and started to dig.

    The moment was preceded by a color guard of military science students, a performance by members of the Galax High School band, and a word from both Schools Superintendent Bill Sturgill and Mayor C.M. Mitchell.

    INDEPENDENCE – The Grayson County Community Health Assessment kickoff meeting was held last Wednesday at the Grayson County Courthouse.

    The group spent about two hours determining some of the problems facing citizens of not only Grayson and surrounding counties.

    INDEPENDENCE — Three people from West Virginia have been charged with breaking and entering and other crimes, after a brief pursuit in Independence.

    According to a police report, Grayson County deputies responded to Little Fox Creek Road in Independence around 2:00 p.m. on June 29 for a breaking and entering at a residence.

  • State police warn of law enforcement scams

    Virginia State Police has recently been alerted to an alarming increase in phone scams targeting seniors and, especially, convicted sex offenders.

    The consistent theme among these scams has been phone fraudsters threatening people into paying hundreds of dollars in gift cards to the caller.

    Celebrations are planned in communities throughout the Twin Counties for July 4.

    In Galax, the Galax Fire Department will sponsor three activities.

    The day begins with the annual Great Galax Duck Race at 10 a.m., when dozens of rubber ducks are dumped into Chestnut Creek from the Grayson Street bridge. Those who have purchased the ducks root for them to cross the finish line downstream at the East Stuart Drive bridge on U.S. 58 next to CVS.

    According to a recent news release, Grayson ranked as #78 in the “Rural, Up-and-Coming” peer group.
