  • Jones receives suspended sentence for embezzling

    HILLSVILLE — Patricia Diane Jones, 57, of Fries, pleaded guilty to embezzling from a Galax business in September and has been sentenced in Carroll County Circuit Court.

    “She did not have any criminal record, so the judge sentenced her to probation,” said Carroll County Commonwealth’s Attorney Nathan Lyons.

    Jones received a 10-year sentence from Judge Brett Giesler, suspended on the conditions that she pay restitution, complete five years’ probation and be banned from all Creek Bottom properties.

  • Grayson grand jury issues indictments

    INDEPENDENCE – A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury met in Independence last Friday and indicted 32 people on charges ranging from drug violations to embezzlement.

    The grand jury also indicted several people and sealed the charges until they can be arrested.

    Among those indicted was John Ford Gilliam, 47, of Woodlawn, charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and malicious wounding.

  • ATV maker responds to wrongful death suit

    INDEPENDENCE ― Responses have been filed by Minnesota ATV manufacturing company Polaris Industries and off-road repair service company Hilltop Cycle Inc. in a $5 million civil lawsuit filed by the family of the late Timothy “T.T.” Carico.

  • Woodlawn man sentenced for sexual battery against child

    INDEPENDENCE — A Woodlawn man was recently sentenced in Grayson County Circuit Court for a sexual assault crime that was committed nearly a decade ago.
    A news release from the Grayson County Sheriff’s office states that Jason Dennis Kegley, 44, of Woodlawn, was sentenced on Sept. 20. A jury found Kegley guilty of aggravated sexual battery of a child under the age of 13 in June.

  • Mother sentenced in child's death

    INDEPENDENCE — Fries resident Tanisha Ann Lineberry, charged with involuntary manslaughter in the 2017 death of her 3-year-old son, Jaylen Lineberry, received a suspended sentence of seven years in the Virginia Department of Corrections after pleading no contest in Grayson County Circuit Court last Thursday.

    Represented by attorney J. Tompkins, Lineberry entered the courtroom backed by members of her family members the morning of Oct. 11.

    Lineberry also faced a charge of child abuse resulting in serious injury.

  • Beasley to serve 30 years

    HILLSVILLE – Many factors were taken into consideration during the sentencing of a man found guilty of attempted capital murder by the Carroll County Circuit Court on Wednesday.

    Kevin Nelson Beasley, 28, of Austinville pleaded guilty on May 9 to attempted capital murder of a police officer, during a chaotic array of offenses that took place in September 2016.

    Beasley was involved in multiple offenses, including stealing two cars and leading officers on two separate police chases and a manhunt across three counties.
