    The City of Galax and Giles County have initiated legal action against opioid manufacturers and distributors for their role in allegedly creating the public health emergency caused by prescription opioids like OxyContin.

  • Kyle sentenced for child abuse

    Staff Report

    INDEPENDENCE — A Fries man, charged last year in connection with a child abuse case, pleaded guilty to a felony charge in Grayson County Circuit Court on Aug. 23.

    Court records confirmed that Xavier Tyquane Kyle, 21, pleaded guilty to abuse of a child, resulting in serious injury — a Class 4 felony. The charge brought Kyle a sentence of three years and six months in prison, with all but four months suspended. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised probation, with probation to begin upon sentencing.

  • Huff to serve 20 months for fatal crash

    HILLSVILLE – Amanda P. Huff of Hillsville will serve less than two years for charges related to a fatal vehicle crash nearly two years ago that took the life of a woman from Meadows of Dan.

    Huff, 28, was sentenced last week in Carroll County Circuit Court.

  • Beasley’s sentencing hearing postponed

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court has granted a continuance for the sentencing hearing for a case that has been active since September 2016 against Kevin Nelson Beasley.

    Beasley’s sentencing hearing was originally set to take place on Aug. 14, but has been moved forward to Oct. 3.

  • Court opens 14 sealed indictments

    INDEPENDENCE – Several sealed indictments have been opened in Grayson County Circuit Court after the suspects were arrested.

    The grand jury met July 27 and returned formal charges against 14 people for offenses involving animal fighting, firearms, drugs and other crimes.

    Those charged include:

    • Nora Ann Wright, 40, of Troutdale – possession of stolen property and felony child abuse or neglect.
