  • Kidnapping suspect from Galax denied bail

    PULASKI — A Galax man charged with holding two people at gunpoint in Pulaski will not be granted bail before his trial.
    Matthew Ray Russell, 33, was arrested earlier this month after allegedly holding two Pulaski residents against their will for about eight hours on March 1-2, followed by an eight-hour pursuit as he attempted to escape custody.

  • Carroll grand jury issues indictments

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County grand jury handed down a total of 111 indictments against 63 individuals on March 18.
    Of the 63, Daniel Christian Jones, 34, of Hillsville, was indicted on nine counts of possession of child pornography. Law enforcement officials confirmed Jones’ arrest last fall, following an investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Hillsville Police Department.

  • Judge dismisses charge of causing deputy's death

    HILLSVILLE – Just over two years since the death of Carroll County Deputy Curtis Bartlett in the line of duty, a case against the man many blamed for his death was finally heard in court.

    The March 13 jury trial was to determine Joseph A. Lambert’s level of accountability for the fatal results of his actions.

  • Guilty plea entered in Fries shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — John Ford Gilliam of Woodlawn has pleaded guilty to two amended charges related to the July 14, 2018, shooting of a Fries man.
    Thursday’s plea hearing in Grayson County Circuit Court was rescheduled from Jan. 24.
    Gilliam was charged in a shooting that occurred on the New River near Fries. Police say he was involved in a confrontation on a boat that resulted in a man being shot in the arm.

  • Hall heads to prison for bomb threat, officer assault

    HILLSVILLE — A Cana man with a violent criminal history has been placed back behind bars after pleading guilty to charges of bomb threats and assaulting a law enforcement officer in Carroll County.

    Ralph Earnest Hall will serve prison time after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a March 2018 encounter with deputies attempting to serve a warrant. According to a police report, Hall became angry when a deputy announced his presence at his residence, a camping trailer, and proceeded to ignite a propane stove inside the dwelling while making threats.
