  • Two more sentenced for drug conspiracy

    ABINGDON — Two more people convicted as a result of the Operation Rolling Thunder investigation have been sentenced in federal court, after pleading guilty to being part of a methamphetamine distribution network.

    The joint local, state and federal investigation sought to dismantle a major drug trafficking organization. Federal prosecutors said large quantities of meth were being transported from Greensboro, N.C., to be distributed in Galax, Grayson County and Carroll County in Virginia and in Surry County, N.C.

  • Woman charged with embezzling from local business

    Staff Report

    A Fries woman charged with embezzling from a Galax business has a trial scheduled for June.

    Patricia Diane Jones, 57, of Fries, was arrested on Dec. 21, 2017, on a direct indictment issued by a Carroll County grand jury that charged her with felony embezzlement from Creek Bottom Brewing.

    Jones formerly worked in Creek Bottom’s payroll department. The offense is alleged to have occurred between Aug. 1-Sept. 23, 2017.

    She is awaiting trial in the Carroll County Circuit Court on June 18.

  • Carico estate files $5M wrongful death suit

    INDEPENDENCE — The family of Timothy “T.T.” Carico has filed a $5 million civil claim against Minnesota-based ATV manufacturing company Polaris Industries; and Hilltop Cycle Inc., a Wythe County company that offers off-road vehicle repair services.
