  • More sent to prison for drug trafficking

    ABINGDON — Eight more people convicted as a result of the Operation Rolling Thunder investigation have been sentenced in federal court, after pleading guilty to being part of a methamphetamine distribution network.

    Operation Rolling Thunder was a joint local, state and federal investigation that sought to dismantle a major drug trafficking organization. Federal prosecutors said large quantities of meth were being transported from Greensboro, N.C., to be distributed in Galax, Grayson County and Carroll County in Virginia and in Surry County, N.C.

  • Carroll grand jury indicts 50

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County Circuit Court grand jury returned indictments against 50 individuals when it met on March 19.

    An indictment is not a conviction, but means the jury found sufficient evidence to advance the case to trial.

    Many of the charges involved possession of methamphetamine.

    Those indicted include:

    • Bryce Edward Absher, 35, of Sparta, N.C.; shoplifting (third offense);

    • Charly Faustino Adame, 28, of Woodlawn; possession of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine);

  • Former county administrator charged

    HILLSVILLE — Investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department has resulted in a drug charge against William E. “Billy” Mitchell Jr., the county’s former administrator.

    An indictment returned by a Carroll County Circuit Court grand jury on March 19 formally charges Mitchell with felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute. Police said the investigation is ongoing and could result in additional charges, based on evidence acquired during the case.

  • Hit-and-run death nets 30-year sentence

    MARION — Convicted in the 2016 hit-and-run killing of 35-year-old Heather Michelle Clontz, a Wythe County man for the first time gave his version of the events that led up to the incident that ended her life.

    Until his sentencing hearing, the now-35-year-old John Randolph Lewis had remained silent during court proceedings. Ahead of his sentencing, Lewis, whose eyes were red and face blotchy, broke that silence.

  • 'Rolling Thunder' defendant sentenced in federal court

    ABINGDON — An Independence man arrested during the Operation Rolling Thunder investigation was sentenced last week in federal court for his part in a methamphetamine distribution network, and seven more co-defendants are set to be sentenced this week.

    Operation Rolling Thunder was a joint local, state and federal investigation. A total of 24 people were charged; 21 have pleaded guilty and three have not been convicted.
