  • Beasley pleads guilty to attempted murder of officer

    Staff Report

    HILLSVILLE – A Wythe County man has pleaded guilty to attempted capital murder of a Carroll County law enforcement officer and other crimes.

    Kevin Nelson Beasley, 28, of Austinville, was indicted by a Carroll grand jury on multiple charges related to a 2016 police chase and a three-day manhunt that spanned two counties.

  • Grayson offered chance to join opioid lawsuit

    INDEPENDENCE – The Grayson County Board of Supervisors has been given the opportunity to join other Southwest Virginia counties in filing lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors.

    The Carroll County Board of Supervisors has opted to join the lawsuit; Galax City Council is still considering it.

  • Grayson court unseals grand jury charges

    INDEPENDENCE – Sealed indictments against eight suspects were recently unsealed in Grayson County.

    A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted the suspects on April 27 and sealed the indictments until each suspect was arrested.

    The list includes:

    • Jason Lee Bourne, Fries – four charges for the sale, gift or distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance (meth).

  • Carroll, Galax asked to join opioid lawsuit

    A law firm is offering to represent Virginia localities as part of a targeted lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies who manufacture opioids.

    The Wagstaff & Cartmell law firm of Kansas is appearing before multiple regional city and town councils, offering to represent them. Recently, they visited meetings of Galax City Council and the Carroll County Board of Supervisors.

    Del. Jeff Campbell, who represents Carroll and Galax in the Virginia General Assembly, brought the proposal to the meetings. Campbell is also an attorney.

  • Trial delayed in deputy fatality case

    HILLSVILLE — A jury trial has been delayed for a man charged in connection with the death of a Carroll County deputy in 2017.

    Joseph Alan Lambert, 21, of Goodview, was being pursued by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department in March 2017 when Deputy Curtis Bartlett answered fellow officers’ calls for help. He was on his way to join the pursuit when his patrol vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at the Interstate 77-U.S 58 intersection.

    Bartlett died at the scene.

  • Bowman to serve 25 years for meth trafficking

    ABINGDON — A Carroll County man convicted as a result of the Operation Rolling Thunder investigation has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison.

    Timothy Bowman, 46, of Cana, pleaded guilty last year to two charges related to his involvement in a methamphetamine distribution network. He was sentenced at a hearing April 24 in U.S. District Court in Abingdon.
