  • Driver in police pursuit among dozens indicted

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County Circuit Court grand jury indicted several people when it met on Monday, including a man involved in a wild police chase earlier this year.

    Caleb Michael Smith, 23, of Austinville, was indicted on four counts of assault and battery of a police officer and eluding a law enforcement officer, all stemming from an April 3 pursuit in Galax and Carroll County that went through parking lots, on the wrong side of the road and onto Interstate 77.

  • Beasley pleads guilty to attempted murder of officer

    HILLSVILLE – A Wythe County man has pleaded guilty to attempted capital murder of a Carroll County law enforcement officer and other crimes.

    Kevin Nelson Beasley, 28, of Austinville, was indicted by a Carroll grand jury on multiple charges related to a 2016 police chase and a three-day manhunt that spanned two counties.

  • Grayson offered chance to join opioid lawsuit

    INDEPENDENCE – The Grayson County Board of Supervisors has been given the opportunity to join other Southwest Virginia counties in filing lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors.

    The Carroll County Board of Supervisors has opted to join the lawsuit; Galax City Council is still considering it.

  • Grayson court unseals grand jury charges

    INDEPENDENCE – Sealed indictments against eight suspects were recently unsealed in Grayson County.

    A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted the suspects on April 27 and sealed the indictments until each suspect was arrested.

    The list includes:

    • Jason Lee Bourne, Fries – four charges for the sale, gift or distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance (meth).
