  • Beasley’s sentencing hearing postponed

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court has granted a continuance for the sentencing hearing for a case that has been active since September 2016 against Kevin Nelson Beasley.

    Beasley’s sentencing hearing was originally set to take place on Aug. 14, but has been moved forward to Oct. 3.

  • Court opens 14 sealed indictments

    INDEPENDENCE – Several sealed indictments have been opened in Grayson County Circuit Court after the suspects were arrested.

    The grand jury met July 27 and returned formal charges against 14 people for offenses involving animal fighting, firearms, drugs and other crimes.

    Those charged include:

    • Nora Ann Wright, 40, of Troutdale – possession of stolen property and felony child abuse or neglect.

  • Keepers pleads guilty to hiding body

    CHRISTIANSBURG — At a hearing Tuesday afternoon, Natalie Keepers pleaded guilty to concealing the body of a teen near Galax, after the girl was killed by David Eisenhauer in 2016.

    Keepers, 21, of Laurel, Md., will still stand trial in September for a charge of being an accessory to murder before the fact. She could face up to five years in prison on Tuesday’s concealment conviction, pending a pre-sentence report.

  • Grayson grand jury charges 14

    INDEPENDENCE – An Independence man has been indicted on rape and three other charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.

    The grand jury met July 27 and returned indictments against 14 suspects on drug violations and other charges.

    William Michael Fritze, 22, was indicted on four charges, including rape, strangling another causing injury, abduction and malicious wounding.

    Other indictments handed down included:

    • Quantel James McCall: two counts of abduction.

  • New trial date set for drug conspiracy suspect

    ABINGDON — A trial date has been rescheduled for the only defendant who did not plead guilty to drug conspiracy, among the 24 people charged as a result of the Operation Rolling Thunder investigation.
    Lelana Long of Meadows of Dan had a jury trial set for this week in U.S. District Court in Abingdon; it has now been moved to Aug. 27-29.
    A judge granted the defense’s motion to delay the trial at a hearing July 12.

  • Shooting suspect to appear in court

    INDEPENDENCE — John Ford Gilliam, charged in a shooting near Fenders Curve near Fries on July 14, has a preliminary hearing scheduled in Grayson County General District Court on Sept. 24.

    Gilliam, 47, of Woodlawn, was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, after officers say he was involved in a confrontation that resulted in a man being shot in the arm.

    According to court records, Gilliam was scheduled for a hearing to appoint an attorney July 17, but the hearing was continued.
