  • HILLSVILLE – Saturday evening was full of excitement in the town of Hillsville as residents reminisced to the sound of hotrods and classic tunes, leading up to the revealing of the 1968 time capsule on Main Street.

    Mayor Greg Crowder opened with a warm welcome to the town and a brief history. “This time capsule was buried here when I was three years old. I can remember that and I thank the Lord that I made it that long,” to see it unburied.

    The capsule was buried in front of Shining Star Salon, formerly Carroll Drug.

  • HILLSVILLE – Citizens and members of the Carroll County Ministerial Association gathered on the historic courthouse lawn in Hillsville on May 3 in observance of the National Day of Prayer.

    Parker Gregory turned age 3 on Jan. 1 and celebrated his birthday at home with friends and family.Parker is the son of Jimmie and Whitney Gregory of Elk Creek. He is the grandson of Eddie and Brenda Ward of Independence and Frances Pierce of Brush Creek.

    Luke Harvey Ward turned 4 years old on Jan. 28. He celebrated with a “Secret Life of Pets” pool party at Wythe Rec Center. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He has three brothers: Braeden, Levi and Grayson. His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Odell Moxley, Mary Jane Hollings-worth, Danna Ward, and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

    William Cayson Sluss turned age 4 on Feb. 25. He celebrated with a birthday party at Rainbow Creations Bounce with the WWE theme. Family and friends attended. He is the son of Scott and Cindy Sluss of Galax. He has a brother, Brandon, and a sister, Madison. His grandparents are Robert and Regina Lundy of Ennice, N.C., and Bud and Pat Sluss of Tazewell.

    exchange vows

    Debbie Gaye Lauze and Charles George Blair were united in marriage at the home of Edward and LaVern Buchanan in Hillsville on March 25.  
    The wedding was officiated by Edward E. Buchanan, minister of Round Knob Church of Christ, Austinville.
    The bride is the daughter of the late Clinton and Ethel Gallimore of Austinville.
    The groom is a native of White, Ga.
    Present at the ceremony were the bride’s daughter, Brittany; grandson, Cameron (ring bearer); and LaVern Buchanan.

  • INDEPENDENCE — During the month of April, the public is encouraged to learn about the complexities of autism spectrum disorder as part of National Autism Awareness Month. In Grayson County, a local mom lends her voice to this cause.

  • Two Galax high school students have created a swinging senior project: a four-man captain’s choice benefit golf tournament, to be held on April 14 at the Blue Ridge Country Club.

    Skylar Morgan and Sarah Wyatt are the organizers, even though, as they both admit with giggles, Wyatt isn’t much for golf. The funds raised will become a cash donation to the Galax Department of Social Services foster care program, which both of them have some experience with.
