Fire department selling tickets for Great Galax Duck Race

By Shannon Watkins

Staff Reports

It’s a long trip to Carnegie Hall, and a great expense to see the Paris Opera, but tickets to the world’s most sought-after social event can be yours for a mere $5.

Just stop any Galax firefighter you see and ask to purchase a ticket to the annual July 4 Great Galax Duck Race, truly an amazing spectacle for young and old alike.

The swells, the hoi polloi and the cream of the celebrity media crop all gather along the banks of Chestnut Creek to watch the thrilling sight of yellow rubber ducks floating downstream.

All monies from the event benefit the Galax Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters will be selling tickets in front of Walmart at regular intervals in the weeks before the race.

The Great Galax Duck Race will be held on July 4 at 10 a.m., starting at the East Grayson Street bridge next to Vaughan Bassett and ending downstream next to CVS. Tickets are $5 each and will be sold, if still available, until the race begins.

The first-place winner will receive a Jackson kayak and paddle, donated by the Chestnut Creek Trading Co.; the second-place winner will receive $100; the third-place winner will receive $75; the fourth-place winner will receive $50; and the duck in last place will receive $50.

You do not have to be present to win — but you will miss the spectacle of the year if you don’t!
