Volleyball teams pick up wins

Galax topped the Indians, Grayson County surprised the Pioneers and Carroll took a pair of wins.

 Galax used a late flurry in the second set to take a three-set win over Rural Retreat, notching a 25-14, 25-20, 25-8 nondistrict win Wednesday night.


Having breezed to the win in the first game, Galax (13-1) found itself in a battle in the second as the Indians pulled out to a 17-13 lead.

A Rural Retreat serve into the net and a Harley Brewer kill ignited the Maroon Tide, which finished the set on a 12-3 run to take a two-game lead.

Three powerful kills by Kem Simmons and two more spikes by Bailey Shumate helped the Maroon Tide pull in front.

Galax had taken the first game with little trouble as Grace Wilson served four straight aces in a 7-0 run that put the Tide in front to stay, 7-2. Allison White, Shumate and Kristen Osborne all added aces at one point or another during the set, and Shumate dropped in two aces among the final three points to give the Tide an early one-game lead.

Galax settled down following the second-set battle, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead in the third and gradually pulling away.

Osborne served for points 9-17 for Galax, including three aces, while Shumate put away three kills and White added a kill and a block during the run.

Shumate and Simmons each registered eight kills for the Maroon Tide and Shumate also put up nine assists. White had six kills to go with a pair of blocks, Brewer had five kills and Wilson had 12 assists. Osborne finished with a dozen serving points.

Grayson Co. def. Ft. Chiswell 3-1:The Blue Devils notched a big Mountain Empire District win Tuesday in Max Meadows, taking a 25-20, 9-25, 25-14, 25-20 win over the Pioneers.

Grayson County improved to 4-8 overall, 2-3 in the district with the win.

Becca Johnson and Erin Barrett paced the Blue Devils at the net, Johnson with 10 kills and Barrett with eight. Johnson also had four aces and eight serving points while Barrett served for 10 points.

Destiny Shupe came up with 18 digs, Madison McCormick had nine assists and Brandi Goad put up 11 assists for Grayson County.

Carroll Co. def. Tazewell 3-0: The Cavaliers had to put in a little extra work before pulling off a 25-17, 25-14, 29-27 win over the Bulldogs in a Southwest District game Tuesday in Hillsville.

Maleah Neely put down 12 kills and had a hand in a dozen more with 12 assists for Carroll County, which improved to 13-0 on the year, 6-0 in district play.

Honesty Rodgers had 11 of the Cavaliers’ 41 digs, Sarah Singleton served for a team-high 22 points and also had five kills, Lexi Hodge added nine kills and Lauren Roper provided seven kills and five blocks.

Carroll Co. def. Abingdon 3-0: The Cavaliers kept rolling with their 12th straight win, knocking off the Falcons in a SWD game last Thursday in Abingdon.

Neely and Dionna Reece led the way at the net for Carroll County with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, and Roper added nine kills. Morgan Dickens had 17 assists for the Cavaliers.
