Vehicle hits bus head-on in Galax

Two injured in collision — student and driver of car

UPDATED 2/3/12:

A car collided head-on with a Galax school bus that was carrying eight students on Thursday afternoon.

According to a Galax Police Department report, the driver of the car, Rubin Morris Christman, 42, of Galax, was traveling east on Middleton Street when he crossed over to the left lane on Middleton, striking the bus head-on.

Christman was removed from his vehicle by Galax Fire Department members.

Christman, who had visible injuries to his head and face, and one student from the bus, who complained of chest pain, were taken to Twin County Regional Hospital by Galax-Grayson EMS. They were treated and released.

The driver of the bus, William Mathieu, 58, of Galax, along with the other seven students, did not suffer any injuries.

The seven students were cared for and taken home by Galax City Public Schools personnel.

Christman was charged with reckless driving, failure to drive to the right of the center of the road.
