Trick-or-treating, food, games planned for Halloween night

-A A +A

Galax and the towns of Hillsville and Independence invite kids of all ages to Halloween night fun on Monday.

The Galax Downtown Association is planning this year’s Downtown Halloween Bash that is set for 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Local businesses, churches and organizations are encouraged to gather downtown to play games, give treats to children of all ages and enjoy an outing for the entire family. The bash offers children a fun and safe place to enjoy the evening’s festivities and to gather treats.

There will be costume contests, free hot dogs and drinks provided for children by the GDA and its sponsors, seasonal music on stage, pumpkin painting and more activities.

Local businesses are invited to join in, and the free event is a way to thank the community for its patronage. Churches are invited to join the family-oriented night to promote their children’s activities.

Contact GDA Director Jeanie Butcher for information about setting up at the bash, at (276) 235-9399 or galaxdowntown@yahoo.com.

A donation of candy can be made to the event in lieu of handing out candy at home. A yard sign is available for donors to indicate they gave candy for the bash instead. Drop off candy donations at Chapters Bookshop, Tuck Chiropractic or the GDA office in the old library building on West Stuart Drive.

The four blocks intersecting at Main and Grayson streets will be closed to traffic at 4 p.m. on Oct. 31 for the safety of participants.

The Friends of Hillsville will host the 2016 Hillsville Safe Halloween on Main Street in Hillsville on Monday.

Goblins and ghouls of all ages are invited to attend on Oct. 31 from 5-8 p.m. The event will include trick-or-treating, hay rides, games, food and fun for everyone.

A costume contest will take place on the Historic Courthouse steps in several categories. Ages 0-2 will compete at 6:45 p.m., ages 3-7 at 6:55 p.m., ages 8-12 at 7:05 p.m. and ages 13-adult at 7:15 p.m.

For more information, contact the town office at (276) 728-2128 or visit Friends of Hillsville Inc. on Facebook.

Independence will host its annual Safe Halloween event Oct. 31 at the Town Park from 4:30-7 p.m.

The Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce will offer free hot dogs to those who attend.

The town is currently seeking additional local business owners who are interested in setting up at the event or donating candy.
