MAX MEADOWS –– Having posted two wins this season over Fort Chiswell, Grayson County had no answer for the Pioneers the third time around as Fort roared to a 73-29 win Tuesday in the Mountain Empire District finale for both teams.

The Pioneers’ 73 points Tuesday were the exact total of their combined offensive output in the two previous losses to the Blue Devils, a 47-35 Grayson win four games into the season and a 43-38 holiday tournament triumph by the Devils in late December.

But Tuesday, it was just Fort Chiswell’s night. The Pioneers (13-8 overall, 7-5 district) built a 14-point lead in the game’s first eight minutes and kept rolling from there. The loss sent the Blue Devils into the district tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 6-15 overall mark, 5-7 in league play. The Blue Devils traveled to No. 4 Bland County for a first-round game Thursday while the sixth-seeded Pioneers went to No. 3 Rural Retreat for their quarterfinal matchup.

Caroline Booher scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the first quarter as the Pioneers pressed their way to a 20-6 lead. Grayson County was still within 13 points midway through the second quarter after a stickback by Kristen Brown, but Fort Chiswell closed the half on a 7-2 run, with Makenzie Harmon’s 3-pointer sending the Pioneers into the half with a 32-14 advantage.

Fort Chiswell opened the second half with eight straight points, and though Breanna Brewer closed the third quarter with a driving layup for a three-point play, the Pioneers took a 46-19 lead into the fourth.

Still pressing with a 27-point lead, Fort Chiswell heaped on 27 points in the fourth, including a 20-1 run at one stage of the period.

Harmon finished with 16 points for the Pioneers and Gracie Robinson, playing her first game after recovering from knee surgery in the fall, tacked on 12 points. Five Pioneers combined to hit nine 3-pointers, and Fort was 22-of-32 from the foul line.

Brown and Jacie Bennett scored seven points apiece to pace Grayson County.
