While Squealers restaurant, formerly located on East Stuart Drive in Galax, had to shut its doors last week, owner Mark Davis said his catering business and Squealers Cafe at the Crossroads Institute are going strong.
For the past two years, Davis’ restaurant has offered some delicious helpings of barbecue, ribs, beef brisket, chicken and burgers. But in a tough economy and with the competition of other area restaurants, he said it just became too difficult to remain in business.
Although it closed for the summer, Davis reopened Squealers Cafe on Thursday. It offers barbecue, sandwiches, wraps and salads.
Support from Wytheville Community College students and employees at the Results calling center at Crossroads, as well as other customers, have kept Squealers Cafe in operation.
The cafe is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Squealers Catering has remained a strong business for Davis. He started catering about six years ago and decided to branch out by opening a restaurant.
“By closing the restaurant, I will be able to make Squealers Catering bigger and better,” said Davis. “I’ll be able to focus on that.”
Squealers Catering offers barbecue, ribs, brisket, burgers, salads, pastas, breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, fresh breads, desserts and homemade sides.
“You crave it, we fix it. No job is too big or too small,” says Davis.
