Smoke on the Mountain celebrates 15 years

Staff Report

Preparations for the 15th Annual Smoke on the Mountain Virginia State BBQ Championship and accompanying street festival are under way this week.

Smoke on the Mountain will be held July 19-20. Once again, the event will be held on historic downtown Galax, but will have a few changes to mark this milestone year.

Friday evening will be highlighted by the new “No Pro Wing Show,” competition, created for the backyard griller or the amateur wing aficionado. It is open to anyone who wishes to share their skills and recipes for competition. Two categories with six cash prizes are offered for those judged to be the tastiest and most tender.

Saturday afternoon will feature a corn hole tournament in the beverage garden area of the festival, at the farmers’ market on North Main Street. As with the wing competition, a purse will go to the champions.

The festival is complimentary, while the Friday and Saturday night concerts at the North Main Stage (near the farmers’ market) require the purchase of a $10 wristband. Performing Friday from 7-11 p.m. is the legendary beach music group, The Tams; while Saturday features Will Jones from 8-11 p.m., back by popular demand from last year’s event.

In addition to the paid concerts on Friday and Saturday nights, JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) and friends will entertain festival-goers with a free concert at the South Main Stage on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. Event organizers are excited to include the student musicians, as they celebrate the traditional roots of the Twin Counties.

DJ Kevin Edwards will entertain from the main stage on North Main from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday.

This year’s Smoke on the Mountain will celebrate our region with arts and crafts booths, farmers’ market goods, local music and local and regional food vendors. “Booth space is still available,” the Chamber said in a news release. “Organizers welcome church groups and civic organizations to participate, showing and sharing the rich tapestry of the place we call home.” For booth information, contact the chamber.

“It is important to introduce the rich texture if our region, honoring the many civic and service clubs which give back to our communities in many ways,” said Twin County Chamber Director Beth Dixon. “This event provides the perfect opportunity to fundraise for your organization or church at a nominal cost and enhance the beauty of the artistic community, which will also be showcased.”

The Chamber also invites festival-goers to get to know the Memphis Barbecue Network professional cooking teams as they compete for national finals and share in highlighting the gifts of our region through music, merchandise, fun and food.
