Galax City Public Schools are collecting donations in memory of five-year-old Matthew Anthony Legg Jr. of Independence, an elementary school student who passed away on April 16 at Twin County Regional Hospital.
Legg was the son of Matthew Legg Sr. and Galax Middle School Principal Kristie Legg.
“He was a wonderful young man, a member of the Galax community and a student at Galax Elementary School. His passing was sudden, but he had a positive impact on so many people in the course of his five years,” said the middle school’s vice principal, Derrick Spence.
To memorialize Matthew and honor his family, a scholarship has been set up in his name. “Our initial goal is $5,000, so that a scholarship of $250 can be awarded annually beginning with the 2015 ceremony. Feel free to give whatever you can, whenever you can and as often as you choose,” Spence said.
Checks are preferred and should be made out to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education (GFEE), with “Matthew Legg Scholarship” in the memo line.
For those who are interested in providing further help with this scholarship, donations can be made at any of the Galax Public Schools or can be mailed directly to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education, P.O. Box 487, Galax VA, 24333.
