Updated 10:30 a.m. — Police want to locate a 31-year-old Charleston, S.C., man suspected of crashing a stolen car while being chased, and then fleeing on foot early Friday.
Sherrard Gathers, a black male thought to have some connection with Galax, stands 6-foot, one-inch tall and weights 200 pounds, said Virginia State Police First Sgt. Mike Musser. The man was last seen wearing a black coat, dark jeans and a black ball cap.
Police have obtained warrants on Gathers for possession of stolen property, felony eluding police and driving on a suspended license after Trooper Chuck Campbell spotted a vehicle on Faddis Hill at about 1:30 a.m.
Campbell started after the vehicle because police were looking for it. The 2000 Saturn has been reported as stolen out of Charleston.
The suspect vehicle ducked into a driveway on Cranberry, but took off again after Campbell pulled in behind it, Musser said. After taking off towards Galax, the vehicle wrecked and received minor damage.
The driver and a passenger attempted to flee. Police caught the passenger, Reynolds Junior Washington, also of Charleston, and charged him with being intoxicated in public, according to Virginia State Police.
The driver escaped on foot in the vicinity of Trapper Drive, Musser said. The Carroll Sheriff's Office had a tracking dog there within minutes, but officers were unable to locate the man.
"We're trying to have an increased police presence where he was last seen," Musser said.
Carroll Sheriff Warren Manning added that on Thursday at about 11 a.m. a home invasion occurred in Cana.
An elderly woman reported that a black male entered her home, according to a report from the sheriff's office. The man knocked the phone out of her hand when she tried to call authorities and he ran out of the house.
The homeowner's car was not outside the house because the owner was getting it worked on then. Manning believes the suspect thought the home was empty at the time.
"Neighbors observed a silver PT Cruiser with North Carolina tags leaving the residence and traveling south on Oak Ridge Road toward White Pines Country Club Road in North Carolina," a news release from the sheriff's office said.
Police believe the two incidents may be related. "Suspect is a black male, mid 20’s, approximately 6’ to 6’3”, around 250 pounds, and may be missing a front tooth."
