Police seek ambulance hit-and-run suspect

Miguel Ortega Rodrigues, 23, of Sutherland Road in Galax, allegedly fled the scene after crashing into a Galax-Grayson EMS ambulance, said Galax Police Captain James Cox.
The Galax Police Department is searching for Rodrigues, and plans to charge him with hit-and-run, driving on a suspended license and failing to obey a stop sign.
Cox said the accident happened at 7 p.m. on April 27. The ambulance, driven by Dickie Melton, was traveling north on Lafayette Street to pick up a patient at the hospital, without emergency lights, when the 2003 Dodge Neon Rodrigues was driving allegedly slammed into the driver’s side of the ambulance. Rodrigues was traveling east on West Center Street and disregarded the stop sign, Cox said.
No injuries occurred in the accident.
The estimated damage to the 2007 ambulance is $9,000, and $10,000 to the Neon.
