Tell Comet & Cupid, Donner & Blitzen: St. Nick picked as Hillsville’s top citizen

By Shaina Stockton

HILLSVILLE — ‘Twas the eighth of December, in the Hillsville Town Hall, when the town council gathered to speak unto all.

Beginning at 7, their usual time, council spoke to the public of each town-owned dime.

Once officials gave updates and citizens spoke, it was councilman Greg Yonce’s turn to invoke what has now become a fun Hillsville tradition, encouraging good deeds and friendly competition. Each month a councilman selects only one kind-hearted town citizen for all he has done. Each month a new councilman has a turn to present their honored citizen before the meeting is adjourned.

After giving much thought to the matter at hand, Yonce was certain his selection was far more than grand. He stood up and as his story he began to tell, from a room in the back citizens heard jingle bells.

“No one seems to know exactly when this man came to [town],” Yonce said, but some say it’s been ages since he first came around. Known for his kind heart and his fondness for others, he greets everyone he meets as his sister or brother.

Neighbors see him in town as they go through their lists, where he often learns just what they’d like for a gift. Always armed with a bag of candy cane treats, this December’s citizen of the month shares them with everyone he meets.

Seen often in town parades surrounded by elves, “He has built things for many,” said Yonce, “including myself.”

No matter the extravagance of requests and demands, each year he works hard to provide all he can.

Yonce said, “he works long hours in his workshop” to do all this, and checks twice for each project on his ongoing list.

This mystery man’s career sends him all over the globe. Though his work can be tedious, he has the patience of Job. Though he only gets to travel one night out of the year, that’s plenty of time for him to spread a world’s worth of cheer.

In his pastime, this man loves to eat candy, sweets and jelly… which Yonce says you can tell by his big, round belly. Cakes, pies, ice cream and sweets of that ilk, don’t compare to his favorite: cookies and milk.

When Yonce contacted this man, he was most happy to hear, that he would receive this honor during his favorite time of year.

As Yonce concluded, the bells drew nearer, and a dawning of who this man was became clearer. The smiles became larger and then came applause, as the citizen was revealed as (who else?) Santa Claus.

Santa shook hands, smiled and shared peppermint sticks with the crowd from his infamous bag full of tricks. Yonce presented a plaque to the jolly old elf, which Santa promised to display on his living room shelf.

Santa gave thanks to all, and as he ducked out of sight, he wished a Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
