As a military police officer, Talmage "Larry" Smith of Galax had been stationed overseas before.

In his 10 years as an MP, he had been to Japan, Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Cuba and Panama, but none of those trips prepared him for the differences of climate and culture he experienced during Operation Desert Storm.

Smith was born and raised in the Coleman community and graduated in 1979 from Carroll County High School.
