Maroon Tide runners fare well at Bristol

 BRISTOL, Tenn. –– Galax placed fourth in the girls’ team standings and fifth in the boys’ results at the Bristol Cross, held Saturday at Steele Creek Park.

The Maroon Tide placed all seven of its girls' runners among the top 60 scoring places in the field of 93 runners, with the top five counting toward the team score.

Freshman Lindsey Ayers led the Galax contingent with her 27th-place finish, completing the 3.1-mile course in 23 minutes, 58 seconds. Jennifer Laws, a sophomore, was 32nd overall in 24:29, followed by freshmen Kelsey Williams (39th, 25:22) and Susan Davis (46th, 26:08) and sophomore Lynsey McChesney (47th, 26:09).

The Maroon Tide finished with 131 points as a team, holding off fifth-place Gate City by 11 points. Greeneville (Tenn.) was the team champion with 29 points and five of the top 10 scoring finishes. PH-Glade Spring was second with 94 and Christian Academy of Knoxville placed third.

A field of 130 runners left the starting line in the boys’ race, and Galax junior Travis Cockerham placed third overall, just 13 seconds behind winner Dylan Jones of Greeneville. Cockerham posted a time of 17:23, holding off Lebanon’s Bradley Rasnake by less than a second.  Justin Ayers was second among Maroon Tide boys, placing 23rd in 18:55. He was followed by Dyllan Taylor (37th, 19:26), Trevor Quesenberry (42nd, 19:33) and Kevin Loftin (44th, 19:36).

Greeneville runners swept the top two spots and claimed the boys’ team title with 46 points, followed by Lebanon (79), Marion (100), John Battle (139) and Galax (149).

Galax will compete Saturday in the Wendy’s Classic in Charlotte.
