Galax left no doubt who the better team was Friday night en route to a 32-7 thrashing of Bland County.

Galax (6-3 overall, 2-1 MED) scored early and effortlessly against a defense allowing an average of 28 points per game. On its first possession, the Maroon Tide took possession on its own 33-yard line. Senior quarterback Terrance Mazon wasted no time airing the ball out, finding his number one target Deion George three times for 74 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

Bland County struggled on offense as much as they did defense all night, and while the Bears managed to move the ball deep into Tide territory, the drive fell short when running back Raymond Green was tripped up on the Maroon Tide 12-yard line.

Galax moved the ball quickly and at will yet again before coughing up the ball on the Bears 6-yard line.

The Tide defense held the Bears to a quick three-and-out and its offense regained possession on the Bears 49.  Two plays later, George made a one-handed grab of a Mazon pass and quickly skirted his way to the end zone for a 44-yard touchdown. Eli Brady’s extra point increased Galax’s lead to 14 with 4:03 left in the half.

Bland fared just as well in the final 24 minutes as it did the first, giving up scoring drives on Galax’s first three possessions. The Tide opened the half on its own 47 and Jacob Fisher ran the ball six straight times, including the final 25 to stretch the Tide’s lead to 20 points.

Galax’s stingy defense again forced a  three-and-out and the Tide offense took over on its own 10 yard line. This time it was freshman sensation Steven Peoples who handled the running duties, barreling for 30 yards on his first four carries.

Fisher took over on the fifth play and moved the ball inside Bland County territory with two powerful runs of his own. Eight plays later, it was the freshman who pounded the ball across the goal line from a yard out to stretch Galax’s lead to 26 with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter.

Peoples surpassed the 100-yard mark in his limited carries for the second straight week, but it was senior Jared Brown, however, who capped the drive off, taking the ball the final seven yards for another Maroon Tide touchdown.

Bland County refused to go home with a goose egg on the scoreboard and responded with its first solid drive of the evening. Dylan Walker led the way with four carries – including a 35 yard touchdown to put six points on the board.

Galax again dominated its competition on the ground, with Fisher rushing for 182 yards and Peoples adding another 131. Mazon – playing only three quarters – added 150 through the air and two touchdowns.

The Tide remained in second place in the Mountain Empire District with the win and will travel to Narrows to finish off the regular season next week.
