BLUEFIELD –– Carroll County made just one field goal after regulation, instead getting it done from the foul line in knocking off Graham 51-50 in two overtimes in a key Southwest District girls’ game Tuesday at Graham Middle School.

The Cavaliers (7-5 overall, 5-0 district) didn’t trail until early in the second overtime. Opening the game on a 9-0 run, Carroll County led 26-15 at halftime before the G-Girls (6-4, 2-1) roared back in the second half.

The Cavaliers misfired on attempts that could have won the game in regulation and in the first overtime. Down 50-48 in the second OT, Carroll pulled to within one point on a Cydnie Cornell free throw, then used two foul shots by Kayla Goins to take the lead for good with 9.9 seconds to play. Goins was 9-for-9 from the foul line, finishing with 15 points. Kaitlan Viars added 13 points for the Cavaliers.

Graham got 21 points from Chelsea Gallinger and 14 from Megan Henry.

The Indians sank 10 of 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter and came from behind to take down Galax in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Rural Retreat.

Galax (5-8), which led 28-26 entering the fourth period, was led by Jamie Webb’s 17 points. Allison White added 10 points.

Charlotte Reasor led three scorers in double figures with 16 points for Rural Retreat (5-7). Jenna Dix scored 13 and Hannah Hadaway chipped in 11.

The Maroon Tide got off to a slow start in each half and fell to the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game Tuesday in Max Meadows.

Fort Chiswell (9-4 overall, 1-1 district) outscored Galax a combined 40-19 in the first and third periods.

Kendra Vaughan led the Pioneers with 19 points. Carlytta Hamm and Nancy Thacker chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Burgandy Bobbitt and Bailey Shumate led Galax with seven points apiece.

The Maroon Tide held off a huge second-half rally and took a key Mountain Empire District win, topping the Pioneers Wednesday in Max Meadows.

Galax (11-1, 2-0), which got 60 points from the tandem of Scott Alouf and Cameron Frazier, led by 20 points at halftime. Fort Chiswell (4-9, 1-1) pulled to within one point late in the game before the Maroon Tide held on for the win.

Galax opened on a tear, jumping out to a 52-32 lead by halftime. Alouf led all scorers with 33 points and Frazier canned four 3-pointers and finished with 27 points. Michael Douglas scored 10.

Hody Viars and Andrew White each scored 23 points for the Pioneers, and Tyler Akers added 14.

Tyler Rutherford scored 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils came from behind for a nondistrict win Tuesday in Independence.

Eric Harvey led four scorers in double figures with 19 points for Grayson County (9-5) and Rutherford finished with 16, all in the second half. Bubba Bowen scored 13 and Steven Eller contributed 11.

Tanner Easter nailed seven 3-pointers and led all scorers with 21 points for North Surry. John Hughes added 13 while J.B. Coram and Blaize Brintle scored 11 each.
