Haynes dominates field for Carroll

 HILLSVILLE –– Kendall Haynes blew away the competition and led Carroll County to the team win in a Southwest District cross country meet Wednesday at the Carroll County Recreation Park.

Haynes’ winning time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds was more than a minute ahead of runner-up David Ratliff of Grundy and nearly three minutes quicker than the third-place time of Zachary Burnett of Richlands.

Strong finishes by Kenneth Horton and Logan Utt helped the Cavaliers breeze to the team win with 21 points. Richlands was second with 58 points and Graham placed third with 58. Tazewell and Grundy did not field complete teams, while Abingdon and Marion did not compete.

Horton finished fifth overall with a time of 22:03, four seconds ahead of Utt, who placed sixth.

Benny Bolen, Hunter Blessing and Austin Puckett placed 12th through 14th, respectively.

The Cavaliers didn’t field a complete team in the girls’ varsity race, won by Katelyn Christian of Grundy in 23:49. Elise Zyvlosky was third for Carroll County in 25:02, Lindsey Brumfield finished sixth and Beth Proffit placed 14th.

Grundy claimed five of the top six individual scoring places and finished with 19 points, ahead of Richlands (55) and Graham (56).


Galax def. Floyd: The Maroon Tide bounced back from a first-game loss and knocked of Floyd County 20-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 in a nondistrict match Wednesday in Floyd.

Down a game, Galax (2-1) opened the second set with a 5-0 run on the serve of Kaitlin Porter and gradually pulled away. Porter served for points 20 through 24 to tie the match at a game apiece.

Galax bolted to a 15-3 lead in the second as Bailey Shumate served for eight straight points, but the Tide trailed early in the third, down 11-6. Galax battled back into a 19-19 tie and pulled away to secure the match.

“We played well in spurts,” Galax coach Rose Houk said. “We’ve got to get past these stretches of not moving, but we’re proud of the girls for fighting back in the fourth game.”

Allison White put away 17 kills to go with five blocks and four digs. Shumate had eight kills, 10 assists, six digs and 15 serving points, and Harley Brewer added six kills. Kelsey Reedy led Galax with 13 digs, and Porter served for a team-high 16 points.
