Grayson girls open with 43-31 win over Trojans

The Blue Devils held Alleghany to 12 points through the first three quarters.


SPARTA, N.C. – Kassie Hawks scored 16 points Tuesday night to lead Grayson County to a 43-31 victory over Alleghany in the season opener for both teams.

Hawks was a strong force for the Blue Devil inside game as she scored the first basket in a game in which Grayson never trailed.

The Blue Devils led 5-0 before Kenyre Adkins hit a foul shot for the Trojans first point with 4:42 to play in the first period.

Grayson took a 7-3 lead after the first period and increased it to 14-6 when Emily Hart hit a layup in the second period.

The visiting Blue Devils led 14-7 at halftime and continued to pour it on in the third period, putting 19 points on the scoreboard.

Lucy Brown gave the Blue Devils a 20-7 lead when she connected on a 4-point play, hitting a 3-pointer, was fouled and made the free throw.

Grayson built a 33-12 lead after the third period but the Trojan girls found some firepower from 3-point range in the fourth period, hitting four shots to cut into the Grayson lead.

Blue Devil coach Tiny Funk sent in second stringers to put the game away.

Eight players scored for the Trojans, led by Adkins with eight, including two 3-pointers.

Grayson was scheduled to play Glenvar at home Thursday and at Virginia High next Tuesday.
