Gladeville lockdown a false alarm

Gladeville Elementary School was locked down briefly this morning when a gun threat was called in to the police. Officials say it was a false alarm and the lockdown was soon lifted.

The call came in to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department at 10:01 a.m., said Sheriff J.B. Gardner. “A retired schoolteacher called and said that there was a man acting strangely and walking in front of the school with a long gun.”

When police arrived on the scene 10 minutes later, they found the man in question carrying a BB gun. He was walking down the road to Wolf Glade Grocery to sell it. He had no intention of harming the school, Gardner said.

Gladeville Elementary locked down as a cautionary measure. The lockdown only lasted until about 10:20 p.m. “They did exactly what they were supposed to do,” the sheriff said. “We were all excited that it wasn’t what we thought it was.”

The man was not charged and his name will not be released, Gardner said.
