Dennis Ray Cockerham, 58, of Lynchburg , Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

He was born in Pulaski, Va., on Oct. 27, 1952. He was a son of the late Stuart H. Cockerham and Doris Denny Cockerham and was the husband of Gayle Rebecca Spencer Cockerham.

He was a proud graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in 1971 and was a student of Liberty University and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. He was a former youth pastor and involved in marketing and the insurance industry. Dennis was also a life long fan of the Washington Redskins.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle; his daughter, Amy Lynn Cockerham of Lynchburg; two sisters, Jeanie C. Brewer and her husband, J.D. of Winston Salem, N.C., and Tammy C. Robinson of Galax, Va.; several special in-laws; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael S. Cockerham.

A celebration of Dennis’s life and faith was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, in the Pate Chapel of Thomas Road Baptist Church with the Rev. David Heerspink officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, Va.

The family received friends from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at the funeral home.
