D-DAY, PART 2: A Day Like No Other

-A A +A

Galax native Walter Dickens and other D-Day veterans remember hitting the beaches of Normandy in a battle that changed the course of history. June 6 was the 70th anniversary of the invasion that turned the tide of World War II.

About this story: This is the second part of a story originally published in The Charlotte Observer. It includes memories from Galax native Walter Dickens and others who saw D-Day from many angles — Americans on the front lines in France, an English girl watching the Allied war machine mobilize, a German soldier in a Panzer tank division and a concentration camp survivor who joined the U.S. Army to get even with the Nazis.
