Crotts, Webb lead all-Southwest voting

-A A +A

It’s always quite an honor to be named a district player of the year. When the award goes to a player not on a district championship team, it only carries a little more weight.

Adam Crotts and Lucas Webb didn’t win a championship in 2010. They certainly earned their district’s respect.

Crotts was named the Southwest District’s player of the year in baseball while Webb picked up the honor in boys’ soccer in balloting by the district’s coaches recently.

Crotts was the main weapon for a Carroll County team that challenged Abingdon for the SWD title before settling for second in both the regular season and tournament. The big senior right-handed pitcher dominated from the mound like to Cavalier has done in years, winning his first six decisions before ending the year with a 6-1 mark after a loss to Tunstall in the Region IV quarterfinals.

Five of Crotts’ wins were of the complete game variety, four coming against perennial SWD powers Tazewell (twice) Abingdon and Richlands. Crotts went head-to-head against Tazewell prodigy Zac Wasilewski twice and came out on top both times, including in the SWD tournament semifinals, a win that propelled the Cavaliers into the regionals.

Crotts was the Twin County leader in wins, ERA (1.31) and strikeouts (66 in 42.2 innings, against just 13 walks). He also held opponents to a .187 batting average.

Crotts was also one of the district’s top hitters, finishing the year batting at a .431 clip (28-for-65) with eight doubles.

Joining Crotts on the first team was Craig Rosen. A senior centerfielder, Rosen led the team in batting most of the year and flirted with the .500 mark before cooling off late in the year. He still hit a solid .425 and led the team in runs scored (24) and triples (5). Defensively, Rosen was a smooth, speedy outfielder who never seemed to make a tough catch because he was usually there waiting for the ball, no matter where it was hit.

Crotts was also a second-team outfielder, while Adam Nester, Tyler Reavis, Zach Edwards, Dillon Bryant and Jordan Lamb were honorable mention picks.

Finding numbers to support Webb were as hard to come by as they were easy for Crotts, but the senior forward made enough of an impression while playing for the third-place Cavaliers for the district’s coaches to recognize him as the league’s best.

Though Carroll County finished behind Marion and Abingdon in the district standings, Webb and fellow first-team pick Ulises Moreno were key members of a Cavalier team  that lost several heartbreakers in the district in the 2010 season.

Jonathan Snow, Cody Jones and Zach Surratt were second-team picks while Tanner Edwards and Brennen Gravley were honorable mention choices.

Lauren Roper earned first-team honors in girls’ soccer, and Cynthia Arellano was a second-team choice.

Sarah Broyles, Baily Leonard, Heather Patton, Summer Rigney, Hope Bowers, Rose Farmer and Suzanne Leonard were Carroll’s representatives on an honorable mention squad that included close to 50 names.

In tennis, Cody Poe and Elijah Edwards were first-teamers for the boys while Patricia Reed picked up first-team honors for the girls. Mason Graham, Alec Felts, Lindsey Poe and Cheyenne Webb were second-team picks while Wendy Burcham, Sarah Sasser, Danielle Dougherty, Travis Joyce and Chris Driscoll landed on their respective honorable mention lists.
